So I am in the process of planning a gate build for my house, I have a couple questions if I may.
I'll start with a small insight to it's size and location. I have a driveway which is 2.8m wide, I will be building the gate at the end of the drive so when it's open I don't lose any of the 2.8m width. the gate for that reason will span 3m roughly and be around 2m high.
For the gates frame I was going to use 50mm box, 2.5 or 3mm wall thickness. The post to mount it I was going to use 100mm box with 8mm wall, I will order a 3m length and sink as much of it in the ground as I can.
I'm hoping the 8mm wall will give enough rigidity to take the weight of the gate without flexing.
1. Hinges, so I was thinking something like this to connect the gate to the post. The only thing that makes me nervous with these hinges is that I will have the threaded part of the hinge on the gate itself, the gate is 50mm box as I said, then the width of the boards inlayed will probably only allow a space of about 30mm to get the nut behind the board, hopefully that makes sense.
Then I was thinking this sort of hinge for the bi-folt part of the gate.
2. I want a single actuator, I've seen some on FH Brundle, they're a lot more expensive than some I've seen online elsewhere, I would like some recommendations if there's any gate fitters/makers here.
3. I was planning of using wood effect pvc, simply because it will hopefully be lighter and also wont need painting which is a big positive. I hate painting!. Do you think something like the pic below is okay if so?
I think that's it. I really appreciate any advice I could receive, It's quite a big project for me.
