On my Portass PD5 lathe, the bull wheel seems to be connected to the V-pulleys via a grub screw. If I want to use the backgear, I presumably have to loosen this grub screw, but then it will be loose and at serious danger of working its way out of the bull wheel and dropping into the bottom of the lathe. So what is the best thing to do? Should I remove the grub screw entirely? It will then be a very fiddly job to get it back into the hole when I no longer want to use the back gear. Or should there be a lock nut to keep the grub screw in place? Or does it need to be a self locking grub screw? Or do I use Loctite? Or what?
How was this meant to work on these lathes when new? This hardly seems like a workable arrangement.
Thank you - Rowan
