Hi everyone I have literally nothing to do so ...
I'd like to make a Swedish style axe head.
It's almost impossible to find the right materials over here in this period , and not in the right quantities.
I have a piece of Monel alloy (stainless steel Fe Ni Cr Mo I don't know the percentages )
Two sds max chiesel
Some mild steel
Lots of 7018 which I don't trust to use on critical jobs because are just horrible to run .
I've already used 7018 in the past to rebuild the striking face on a sledgehammer, an the cutting edge of a burk bar ,it seems to harden because the sledgehammer face doesn't show any signs of wear despite the use and the pry bar is still sharp
SDS max chiesel should be tool steel , I've used it for my slag chipping hammer ,I don't know maybe I've done something wrong with the temper it doesn't seem to hold the edges , but might be also normal because of its intended use (I don't think that SDS chiesel are hardened to death)
I've used Monel to make a bushcraft knife and my uncle who has hardened and tempered it (skilled knife maker) has said that it's pretty good material .
I've had serious problems while drilling it prior the hardening process (1050°C to ambient temperature)
mild steel I already know that doesn't work but I'd use it for the eye part and the core , and maybe the striking face
TIPS and thoughts are well appreciated .
I'm aiming to reach 1.2kg weight more like an hatchet , with a cutting profile ,so not for splitting
