Hi guys first post here (no doubt will be more in future ) I’ve been asked to weld up some stainless steel exhausts for a mate to use on his turbos he sells. (Guy he brought off before has retired) Now I haven’t had much tig welding experience but MMA an mig are all good, as I use them quite a lot in my current job, only ever used a tig once and that was on mild steel to make some holding tanks at my old job and they supplied a rented tig unit for the job, I got it done and was quite pleased with the results.
He’ll be giving me a old one to use as a mock up so I can make a jig to tack up on and I’ll make some aluminium purge/chill blocks too do final welds an hopefully to speed up the process, now I’m quite confidant with abit of practise I’ll be able to weld these manifolds up but I just have a few questions that I could do with some advice on, so here goes ( I apologise now)
1.going to use a r tech 160A analogue ac/dc welder, it comes with a wp26 air cooled torch, I was thinking would a number 7 be better off? Also going to use a gas lense with the torch for better argon coverage, I’ll practise with a number 7 cup on scrap pipe first to get a feel for best settings.
2. Is there a best grit/type of grinding wheel to sharpen tungsten with?
3.the pipes are 2” diameter 304 stainless so I know I need 308L filler but unsure what best size rod an tungsten to use, the pipe is roughly 3-4 mm thick I’m told.
4. I know cleanliness is important and seen people clean with acetone, is it pure acetone or diluted?
I’m sure I’ll think of more soon but this will help me for now, I thank you all in advance and I’ll show the results once I start them
