well..... i thought a welding question in the weld section and a paint/ protection question in the paint section.That's two threads of the same thing!! Don't drink and weld!!!!!
appreciate it rikrobson i will try but weld, like you say i think it might blow through so will try what you say and keep moving around the patch to reduce heat and possible blow throughbutt weld is the better method but with thin panels you can easily blow through. The problem with lap welding is if you only do one side you have a moisture trap on the overlap. if its in an unseen place then the easiest way is to pop a patch on with a small overlap and then apply some sealant to the other side. If its body work then you will need to either butt weld or joggle the patch panel so the overlap is behind the body panel and stepped so the face of the patch is flush with the panel.
you also want to stitch weld, where you do a wee spot at a time to stop the metal getting too much heat into it and warping
