Hi all,
You guys were really brilliant when I was learning to tig a year or two ago, and now I'm starting to learn arc welding as I have a task outdoors. I had an initial go today and am getting a feel for things, but I have a couple of questions. Firstly, I have heard it is good to double back and fill the crater at the end of a run (I decided not to do this until I know the answer to my question)... I am dragging the rod as I go along the joint, so if I double back to fill the crater, should I also change the position of the rod so I'm still dragging as I move back, or do I keep the angle the same as I did for the main run as I don't want it to worm hole?
The other thing is that I'm using a dc tig inverter as the power source. The amps dial is clearly not calibrated when on mma mode, so I am just having to try things out to dial it in. I'm currently noticing on fillets that when starting from cold plate I want to get the rod to bite in right from the start, but once the piece heats up as I weld along the joint then I wonder if it is too hot and should I be pre heating? I've attached a couple of pics as it would be good to know if I am too hot, too cold, arc length, correct amount of spatter, etc... as I'm just a beginner there are so many factors that I could be messing up that I would appreciate some guidance from the experts. Thanks all!
