Arc or MIG?

Want to buy a welder to learn on and to do general repairs to my landrover chassis, so there will be vertical and overhead welding required.

All welding will be outside, whether this will make a difference?

Arc - cheaper, harder to learn?, more suited to outdoors.
MIG - more expensive with the hassle of gas rental, easier

am i pretty much there?

mig without a doubt will weld much better a lot better for thinner steel there is no competition

what sort of amperage should i be looking at then?

is gasless really as bad as it seems to be?

the clarke ones seem to be qite good have a look here

Do you reckon a Sealey MIGHTYMIG150 would be any good, does gas and gasless so gives me the option of which to use? not too badly priced either.

To see the gasless video in dutch is "gasloos"
If i remember correctly gasless mig isn't quite suitable for carbody panels because it get's hotter... but i'm sure another member on here will know more about this!

id go for gas everytime for this stuff, as sparky says you will just burn through with gasless... trust me haha!! i use a clarke 150 te now and its a good little machine. outside welding could be a pain if its breezy blowing the shielding away.

How long would a can of disposable gas last? 10 mins 1/2 hr?

regarding welding a landy outside with mig and the probs of sheilding gas being blown away, its not too bad and can be made quite cosy even in bad weather by standing some sheets of ply or similar against the wind, it can be quite nice under there, as long as you don't get a great blob of molten metal down your neck or ignite a packet of matches in your top pocket, done both of these, hilarious to my bosses wife.
Welded my own landy with an arc set, nightmare, mig is far better on them.
what power, if you are ever going to do outriggers I would go 150a, it should do them ok with .6 wire.

At risk of going off topic and getting wrong from malcom, its the quickest i have ever got out of a pair of overalls.

Bosses wife was looking out of window and was completely helpless laughing too much as i was stamping on the overalls while smoke emerged from arms and leg holes.
It was quite amusing after the event.

other mug to do it, unless of course you like the sound
of sparks fizzing in your ears, the smell of burning chest
wig and you think your shower tray looking like the floor
of a hairdressers is cool.

Haha! don't worry for going wrong with Malc! He's the best forum leader you can have! I'm a member for almost 2 years now and i really put his nerves (and the forum swear filter ) to the test with my big mouth, and i'm still allowed in...
