Anyone proper familiar with London taxis (TX1 etc?)

Im wanting a LHD 4 bolt adwest power steering box. Landrover part number for this is QAF500120.

Here is a photo of a landrover one -

But, sometime back, someone said that they were the same unit as used on RHD london taxis. They certainly look the same. Here is a photo from the first ebay listing that came up -

Now the QAF500120 is, i guess, a landrover designation, but how can i know, with certainty, that both these are the same?

Obviously finding a LHD landrover box is way harder than nipping on ebay and choosing between several sellers of the taxi PAS boxes.

@julianf There is a new (ex nato) LHD one thats been festering in my shipping container for a number of years, its cosmetically challenged but never been fitted and still has the plugs fitted. PM me if interested

The flange on the bottom, just by the drop arm joint, is certainly different (or so I learnt yesterday).

It's not that obvious in the photos I posted, but the landrover one is quite wide, whilst I think the taxi one is narrower.

But I don't know about internal working / expected pressure etc.

Due to the turning circle of a taxi I suspect the operating angle is greater on the taxi that a Land Rover.

Here you go @julianf , poor pics because the thing is buried at the back of the barn and had to use a torch for light . RHD RR steering box fitted to a LHD 101 and works well.

RR steering column unaltered straight through the floor using the original hole.



10mm bracing plate bolted through the outrigger onto the RR steering box directly under the floor. One UJ







Arm needs notching into the chassis but cant get the Ipad in there, steering arm points up.



Cut down RR steering link/mongrel 101 ball joint to the steering relay

I have the rhd box in front of me right here, and I'm just trying to rotate it in my head to fit the 101.

I think maybe tomorrow I'll go out to the truck and see if I can't hold it into rough position with your photos to hand.

Right, ive just been out with the torch and taken some snaps -

This is from underneath, looking up at my leaky steering box on the right, and then the gap where the drop arm from the existing box resides -

Here is another shot of the same -

And then this is the drop arm comming up out of that "box" area, and the linkage that goes to the steering relay -

So, am i right in thinking that, in your shots, the body of the PAS box is sitting in that "box" area that the original drop arm moves in, in the shot above?

And then youve re-enforced the face closest to the front of the truck to support the 4 main mountings of the PAS box?

This is a photo of the RHD box -

Im thinking those two additional mountings must then face down toward the floor, and are fastened through the chassis, where you have to notch it? Ie the bolts would go down toward the ground.



The bit thats got me confused is this photo of yours -

That little bracket - i was looking for that, but that is somthing you have added to support (?) the steering column, right?

Yes , the power steering box now sits within the cross member under the drivers footwell, the splined lower half of the steering box passes through the chassis with the steering arm pointing upwards. The idler arm orientation was moved on the splines to accommodate. Will get you some more pics of brackets etc and some dimensions.

Ok a few more pics Julian.

Chassis was cut as per this drawing and filled in with 10mm plate with captive nut to hold down steering box two bolt flange. the angle of the cut was to suit the angle the steering column tilt if that makes sense which lessens the angle the single uj has to run, column was supported on a bracket with two cotton reel rubbers at the base to allow for flex. ( just visible behind the uj on third pic down in my post above) Top of chassis had a piece of 6mm welded back on for support.

So basically the two bolt flange on the steering box is sat inside the chassis on a 10mm plate shelf.



You can just see the steering box flange in the picture below. a piece of angle was welded to the side of the chassis for the steering box support plate to bolt to so it can all be removed if necessary .
