Another lighting query.

Al last after a load of nagging my landlord is fitting lights into my workshop.
I have excellent natural light which has been handy.
He has fitted a sodium floodlight which gives off a not nice orange light not very good and has mentioned LED floodlamps, these seem affordable, but are they much good indoors?
I have seen two types cool and warm light, which should I ask him to go for?
I reckon he fits say two of them over my bench then I can expand as I need.

Cool is a bright light, warm is more natural

I use lights between 4000k and 5000k for colour matching, as anything else is too harsh

I'd choose warm personally, unless you want to inspect in microscopic detail

I've got about 70% cool 30% warm fluorescent tubes in my garage, the cool tubes give a much brighter blue light that I prefer when trying to see what I'm doing on the bikes.
LED's give a very directional light that shadows things in my opinion.

Trouble with flourescents is my landlord is a cheapskate and LED just seems to be plug and play and cheap.
I need something doing now, maybe later when funds allow I can add to it.

The space is pretty big, 16x6m with a 5m ceiling

I'd go for lots of warm white LED's. They are cheap so no reason not to put them all over the place, especially since they are quite directional.

I've had lots from 2300K to 6500K and the best (for me) is 4000K.

"Warm" and "cool"have quite a wide range from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Edit: at five metres you'll be wanting 20W minimum and probably 30W in the areas you need it for detail work.

I just bought one 10W one and took it from there. Under a tenner delivered I think.

4000K.

4000k is good for me too, in our kitchen for example I use warm for the main lighting and cool for the work surfaces, that seems to be a fine mix.

You could consider Metal Halide instead of Sodium. You would require special type of MH bulb that will run on sodium ballasts but they are available. With MH bulbs you can get anything from yellow to deep blue.

I have just fitted 3 50w led's in a barn about the same size and was impressed at their output! They were cool white and fitted to the mid point of the roof. That was for horses though, I also fitted a 100watt one outside for the yard and they are bright.

Your only problem with the LED lamps is the falloff - the bright centre cone is only about 30deg wide. That means the really nice brighter bit isn't very big or long.

YMMV of course but three 30W or even maybe five 20W might work better for you...

^^^ I agree it was noticeable difference at the edges of the barn I did! And I think it is a strange colour too especially the cool white, it plays tricks on my eyes!

He is a cheapskate but a reasonable sort.
I am paying £300 a month with the first year at £200. Ok it cost me a fortune to get the place insulated. he is paying for a starter light system.
So say three 50w should get me going. One each end one in the middle then smaller ones as and where needed.
Oh and he did not charge me any rent until I started working, so three months after we agreed I would have the place.

Yes I found them quite different to more traditional halogen or sodium. As a positive byproduct though, the light pollution is far less with them.

Were the 100W ones Cree style single chip ones or multiple SMDs?

The other tenants moan like the clappers, I cant fault him.
I have been asked not to discuss my rent with them.
he has been very good to me.

a few cool white fittings will look clinical a couple of warm white ones added as well make the light look more natural
