You can't use an ammeter with leads - the current is far too great for the meter. You need to use a DC clamp meter (assuming you are using DC to weld).Arc welder 140 . Amp meter has two leads live and earth ,so connect live to rod holder and earth to earth lead and turn on ?

yes and no, normal practice used to be to use a shunt so the meter measured only a small part of the current flow and was calibrated to that shunt.
