Adding more thinners to Jotun 87

Hi all,

I am going to be painting the floorpan on my beetle project and I have a load of jotun 87 left over which I want to use as a primer. The only issue is if I thin it to the max jotun recommends (10% iirc) I will need to use my 2mm+ tip (hvlp) and the finish is like woodchip. Rather than going by and buying some grey lechler, can I thin the jotun down even more so I can use my 1.8mm tip and get a half decent finish, or am I being too tight

Yes, you can thin it more but don't go much over 20% or it will tend to chip.
Also let it dry between coats.
Another way is to heat it which will help with the thinning but will reduce the pot life.

I use a 2.5 nossle and can get a good finish straight from the (very cheap) gun.
Keep the fan tight and put on nice wet coats, it's almost impossible to make it run even if it's overthinned.

If I need a heavy coat to cover a multitude of sins it's my go-to primer filler and I'd have thought it would be ideal for your application.

If you have the time, it works very well but it does take time to harden if you intend to sand it.
It will ball up in the sandpaper if dry but not cured, once cured it sands like any other epoxy.

Wouldn't hurt to warm everything up a tad. You'd be surprised how it alters the viscosity

This is some Jotamastic 90.
Two coats slightly overthinned with thinner 17 using a cheap spray gun with a 2.5 fluid tip, over blasted steel, no sanding or anything else, but overnight between coats.
For what it is, I think it's fine.
It could obviously be improved with more work but why bother.

Is that standard 90 or the one with aluminium powder in it?

I have sprayed Selemix epoxy primer through a duren mini gun with a 1mm needle. I had to thin it a bit more but it went on very nicely & hasn't come off yet. I gave it an extra couple of coats to account for the thinner paint.
