Hi all new too the forum. Ive seen a few threads that show the use of AC Tig, But it has always been my understanding that you need a three phase supply to run AC and the supply into the home is single phase. can anyone shed some light on this as I would like to do some ali welding in the garage.

No - ac is single phase and 3 phase. The no of phases required has more to do with the power requirement.
You can get ac tig units of all sizes. Have a look at some web sellers, maybe MigTigArc, DIYWelder. There are lots of single phase units available.

As far as I can see Clarke don't do an AC tig inverter. You're looking at a grand, minimum, for that (probably £1500 min is more accurate). Portamig do a non inverter ac/dc machine for under £1000. I'm sure if you PM Weldequip he'll give you a price on Monday, or before if he's back off his hols...
