I have a 12 speed pillar drill with MT2 spindle and 1/2hp motor...is it worth getting a converter/sleeve to allow it to take a 32mm 4mt taper drillbit?
it goes down to 116rpm....
Even a standard Starret hole saw with a bit of cutting oil will make light work of 3mm steel in a pillar drill.I use hole saws with a straight pitch for this sort of thing
I don't know about the Aldi ones but the Lidl stepped drills are possibly the worst thing I have bought from the middle isle, two mine were as soft as cheese the third one ended up, unused in the bin with it's siblings. The stepped drill bit set f 3 that was at Aldi recently went up to 32mm.

Does your friend have a cylindrical grinder? I could never get it that perfect freehand.
Single pitch, bit of cutting grease and go easy. Done lads with shop drill and hand drill . When you use the double pitch type they tend to grab and break teeththe converter makes them a fair bit longer and the drill that size in thin metal will snatch on brake through . as above id use a hole saw a big drill wont do the half hp motor any favours
The blacksmith drills have thier limits for sure even in a good chuck I would not like to go so big.. However in 3mm I suspect it will make a right mess..
