I know it's been quite a while :o but I did eventually get round to checking the welding voltages.
Clarke 100E - Voltage when welding :
1 min - 16.4
2 min - 17.7
3 min - 18.5
1 max - 19.7
2 max - 20.3
3 max - 21.9
I would...
Thanks for the info about the relay, that may come in handy.
The curtain wire makes an excellent steel liner with less resistance than the plastic liner, it's worth fitting one as it reduced the strain on the wire feed motor.
Cheers.
Thanks for your help.
I may get round to measuring the arc voltage one day but for the time being I'm happy to use the settings low to high as I listed them.
Cheers.
Hi,
Yeah appreciated it will be open voltage, but does it still not show that the switch settings go from low to high in the order I have them listed?
Cheers.
Resurrecting this post as I've just tested the settings on a 100E mk2 and got the following :
First switch---Second switch--- Third switch---Voltage between tip & earth clamp
1__________either_________min_________19.4
A__________2____________min_________21.2...
I thought that's what you meant.....that won't work as I only have one wire in the torch.....
If you look at the photos....in photo 002e you will see the thick black cable at the top right of the photo, this is the negative feed to the torch, when you pull the trigger on the torch the switch...
I'm confused.....
The + (positive) to the wire feed motor is tapped from the big transformer in the welder.
The - (negative) to the wire feed motor is via the switch in the torch....this negative is from the big thick wire that supplies the negative to the torch for welding.
I've measured the...
Ok, back to plan "A" then.
In the digram you posted it shows the torch with a switch.....the torch already has a switch mechanism that controls the wire feed motor....would it be possible to also somehow use this switch as the trigger for the relay?.... maybe I would have to add extra...
Ok, here's a few photos of the machine....tell me where you want me to test for the voltage with the multimeter....

So a 20 amp car type relay would do the job then?
I'll get the side off the welder tomorrow and get a photo of the layout to clarify where the relay would go etc...
Thanks for your help with this.
Cheers.
Could I ask you to explain how you would do this?
I've been given a SIP Handymate gasless mig that has the live torch and if it's not hard or expensive to do I would like to convert it to a non live torch.
The conversion doesn't have to be pretty and if I can cobble a few cheap parts together...
Hi,
thanks for the reply.
I'm asking this for my friend (I know people say this all of the time but it's true in this case) so I'm not 100% sure what his bottle is, he's always just referred to it as his "Mig Bottle" I just assumed it was a CO2 bottle.
I think he used to get it filled...
