Well, if it is a repulsion motor you only have supply connections to the stator coils. In which case it may simply be series for 240V, parallel for 120V.
HF on continuous for AC welding
Hi,
For AC TIG welding (e.g., for aluminium) the HF needs to be on all the time. See for example

Similar to BillJ's comment, I buy good/expensive tools when I know that I'll get years of use out of them or the quality is required right from the start (e.g. welders, soldering irons, test equipment). Other stuff - occassional tools - I buy cheap to begin with where I've made the judgement...
Au contraire ... when I sell a car, the new owner "takes away" the car.
If you read the entire #10 post you will also note that oilcooled wrote "put it back in the box and gave it too him" -- unlikely to be stolen then.
Well, my old exploding one was itself a shop replacement for a previous B&Q cheapo model that just stopped (suspected open-circuit battery that time), and well outside of its return period so its in the bin now.
Treated myself to a Makita courtesy of B&Q's current half-price offer. I hope it...
My 2-yr-old el-cheapo B&Q "Performance" cordless drill finally gave up the ghost yesterday in a most spectacular fashion - one of the battery pack cells exploded with a loud bang, black confetti, and lots of plastic shrapnel flying off around the garden. Fortunately no one was injured (might...
At one time I also thought about building my own TIG converter for an AC welder. After a while I bailed out and bought a DC inverter :)
Here are some of my thoughts on this topic:
AC TIG you have two parameters for the waveform: frequency and duty cycle. As others have pointed out the...
Nope, that won't work - you still have three outputs, it just converts delta (L1 L2 L2) to star (L1 L2 L3 N).
As mentioned earlier I think the only practical way of combining the three phases to get more output power is a switching converter. But it may be cheaper to buy another genny...
Interesting thread, this.
One word I haven't read in this thread yet is "insurance". When bottles go wrong, it is usually messy, expensive, and in some cases lethal. Do you think for one second that any insurance company, including household (have you checked with your household insurance...
Hi, I have a Ferrous FM-110 which I did a complete strip-down rebuild on.
Yes, the front panel sockets are tapered brass, giving a large contact area with a push fit. Predates DINSE by a few years, and as long as the plug is pushed in and the cable is not tugged it should stay in place...
No, don't strip and and paint them. Usually they either have an oxide coating on both sides, or one side will be lacquered. Oxide (rust) is enough of an insulator as there's very little volts. Most low-cost transformers are impregnated with varnish to (a) add to the insulation and (b) cut...
Last year I completely stripped and serviced my little Oxford RT110, taking it completely apart, cleaning and painting the casing (top and bottom), filtering the oil and scraping out the sludge from the bottom. Its a very simple system inside - the trickiest bit was putting the current selector...
