Hi,
I just recently got a Mig. Cheap and bad, but that's not the point here. I use a 5 kg bottle from Albee Air Liquide (https://industri.airliquide.no/gasslevering/gassflasker) with a built-in regulator and a snapon fitting that came with it. When I open the valve, gass is leaking out. actually...
Thanks all! So, bending back cold seems worth a try. Slim boy: I thought about the same, long pipe over the stanchion (which is just galvanized and painted pipe). When that won't work, I will try Chris' suggestion with chain and bottle jack. Didn't think about that! I will let you know how it...
Hi there,
I have a steel boat with welded on stanchions. Some godforsaken creature must have crashed his boat into mine while mine was berthed. Strangely enough he/she/it managed to bend two of the stanchions, both at the same angle and without damaging the hull. See pictures.
The boat is...
I don't know how you guys manage to find all these great vices? Were I live it's either buying useless cast iron ones or pay a prohibitive price for a new forged one. I was sick and tired after I broke two of the first kind and was not willing to go the second road. So I chose the third option...
Has anyone first hand experience with this one:

I have an arc welder for the big stuff, just need a small mig for some sheet work.
Thanks
Thanks guys!
I'll try the bonfire first. My neighbors probably won't like it, it'll have to wait until I can go to the coast some day .
Al: I had another look at the angle bar, it is only 3mm. Do you think that's strong enough?
Walter
Hi folks! I have a rounded piece of 6 mm plate - about 40 x 60 cm - that started life as part of a boiler. I managed to flatten it somewhat with some angle bar and lots of clamps as well as some heavy wacks with a sledge hammer, but it's springy and still nowhere near flat. I want to make a...
Hi,
just started arc welding. Some members here have warned against the very cheap rods. At my local toolshop they sell rods from Elga (Swedish) - has anybody used those?
It's an old thread, but anyway ... Here the prices for De Walt have been coming down substantially. Two years ago I got myself a De Walt 12 V with two batteries and a 1 hour charger. Here in Norway they now cost something like 60 £ - I suppose they are considerably less elsewhere.
Love it...
Yes, that's the site where you'll find the 40-footer I have in mind: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/origamiboats/. Search for the BS 40. It's a Yahoo group, so you will have to sign up first. Are you into steelboats too? Must be a heavy kayak, then ...
Archie, thanks for the hint. I'll get in contact with them after the weekend. Was looking at their website and the machines they displayed there where monsters. But maybe that was just today and they have smaller welders too.
Weldequip, when I first looked at the buyers guide for a MIG on...
Thanks for your comments! Of course money is an issue - it always is! How large an industrial MIG do you think it would have to be? From what I saw anything bigger than 150 A is way beyond my reach (for now). I was hoping to buy the welder now, learn the art step by step and start with the big...
Weldequip, thanks for the advice! I didn't think to jump right into welding the hull. I only recently started looking for someplace or somebody who can take me by the hand until I feel up to the task. I am serious about the project, though and thought that buying the welder first would get me...
It's the big dream for the future, so I'm building for me. And of course, it's going to be home for longer periods at a time.
Weldequip, you seem to know it all what's worth knowing about welders - I'm enjoying your comments on the forum very much! What would you recommend for my purpose? A...
Hi rswinburne,
I'm in Norway too. Just curious: what quote did you get for the Kemppis? I am also looking for a reasonable quality MIG between 150 - 180 A.
By the way, they sell Lincoln in Norway. Cost an arm and a legg, but they do: http://www.sveiseeksperten.no/sveisekatalog/
Hi Aero,
yes, Norway is sort of connected to Europe, but it also has 25 % VAT and a very observant customs service. A MIG welder is hardly something you can take with you on the plane as hand luggage and when I order something across the border, until I am done with all the hazzle of VAT refund...
