I have got it all fixed and back together. Its so old and fragile I seem to break something else everytime it goes back together. However, we now have a nice hiss coming from the torch. Not had the change to use it yet, but will do tonight and let you know how it goes.
It seems I have...
I think I have found the problem. There is no gas coming out of the torch! I took the MIG apart and it seems there is a valve (I guess to flow the gas when the trigger is pressed) and the gas is not getting through this. It looked a bit corroded so I have cleaned it, just have to put it all...
PS: You can see what I am up against once I have got my welding up to standard...

I have linked this site on there too.

Malcolm,
I tried it on the lower power setting, but I just seem to get a load of spitting and not much else, I end up with a weld that I can snap off. Maybe I just have bad technique here. Any suggestions?
I'll try it again on low tonight and stick another picture up.

Cheers malcolm,
I have an auto helmet coming today.
It was on full power (its a 85A mig) and wire speed was 2/3 up. Less wire speed and I was burining holes.
Interesting about the gas. I didn't know how much I should be giving it. I am using Co2 in small bottles with a floating ball...
Ok, here are some pictures of a weld I did tonight. This is in 1mm sheet.
This one is the top...
Here is the bottom...
How is this weld looking? To me I am not getting enough penetration when I look at the bottom, but if I hold the postion any longer I blow through. I did it...
Ah, now I see the problem with the picture. The p0rn filter here will not allow pictures with the word 'penetration' in the title. I'll have to wait until I get home to see these filthy dirty pictures of welds.

Malcom, Just reading your article on welding thin sheet. The last picture of the reverse side is missing. Do you have it (or another one) so I can see what I should be aiming for?
Cheers
Graham
Thanks malcom.
I'll try and get a picture up when I get home.
My welder is the live wire type so I can't do that. Currently I have to dab the wire on about 1cm or so away from where I want to start welding to make enough light that I can see where the join is.
From the underside the...
Hi,
Thanks to those who helped me get my second hand MIG set up last month. Since then I have been practicing on some 1mm sheet (I am learning to weld to restore my car) I can make nice runs in single sheet with good penetration, but when I try to butt weld it all goes to pot! I can weld...
Thanks weldequip,
How do you replce the lining? I can't see how to remove the brass end from the valve section (I mean where the wire and gas mix and the control button sits). I'll have another bash later. If this is the problem, then how much are these parts?
Thanks
Hi, I have brought a second hand SUPERWELD MONOMIG 100. The wire that was in it looked a bit iffy, so I brought some new stuff (correct size 0.6) It feeds fine until it gets to the torch body but does not seem to go through the 'valve' part, so does not reach the neck.
I have tried pushing...
MOT time for my MG , its quite clean all over but there is one patch of rust on the A post on the inside between the two hinges as you open the door. Its not a hole as such, but I am sure if you gave it a push with a screw driver it would go. Does anyone know how this stands on an MOT test...
Thanks malcom, that's great. Good site you pointed me at as there are many similar repairs I will need to carry out.
Got the car last night, just need to sell my XJS now to make room in the garage.

Hi all, I'm new here and new to welding. I have brought an MG Midget and while I am happy with the mechanical jobs I have never done body work.
So here goes with my first silly question...
If welding a patch to a cleaned up hole in a vehicle, should the patch fit snug inside the hole with...
