Thanks folks,
It will only be for those occasional awkward places..I hate grinding anyway...make me realise I put too much weldd on, usually when I am trying to chase a hole etc
I'll go pnuematic, compressor is small but allows me to spray a car so i should keep up.
Thanks again
Practice is free and I need it. My bench results are always miles better than on the car where welding on a vertical panel seems more difficult.
Better than throwing 500 quid at it though,
Thanks
Thanks for the tips, more practice may be a better investment as the Parweld 170 I bought recently is better than I am.
I have some brass blocks, hopefully those will work as well as copper?
Hi Folks,
Need help to buy the right tool and I'm not sure of the type/name.
I'm looking for a tool for grinding welds in toght spots such as right angled corners where a std grinder can't fit.
I bought one of those silverline small belt grinders but apart from using a belt for every minute...
Thanks, you are right. most of the time I'll use my mig but those long external seams that also go around the rear arches on an old mini .
There are a few meters of external flanges that could be spot welded on a classic mini and my plug welding skills are not the best so I end up spending hours...
Hi Folks,
I'm thinking of buying a spot welder as I have quite a few new panels to fit on my classic mini.
Those long external seams would be easier and faster with a spot welder, I have a parweld 171 for all else.
I've seen a few on ebay but not sure about the reliability and function, they...
What difference in thin metal performance would I find if I used an inverter mig, considering I am no expert welder.
One thing would be the size, in my small garage that Parweld is HUGE compared to the ancient mig.
regards
Thanks guys,
What diffeence would I find with a 2 stage regulator? The parweld reg I have is a single stage 2 gauge.
I wish Parweld would do better videos on how to best use their welders especially for car work.
American companies have great youtube videos that go into great detail and also...
Thanks, I'll look for better light, the garage is quite gloomy even with a few tubes in it
I think I should get some glasses for close work, I'll get that checked. That and poor lighting don't help.
Thanks again folks
Thanks, I have a peashooter gauge, I guess I need to disconnect the wire to test with that.
I am using hobbyweld 5 size and the regulator was supplied with the parweld kit, it has two dials one for gas remaining and the other as output in LPM. no leaks anywhere, I am surprised at how much gas I...
Pics of a test piece that worked ok, welded in horizontal and angled, there was blowouts near edges. Setting was mostly 1 and a few on 2. (The small crappier welds bottom left are where my son was learning the old mig)
Other pics are welds of new panels on car, you can see plug welds needed a...
Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
I bought the 0.6 wire as Parweld recommended that when I told them the trouble I was having, I switched to roller to the correct dia also
I forgot to mention that when I try tacking these small plates it is sputttery and not sizzling, sometiimes it has a...
Thanks folks,
I expect my technique is not the best but the machine should perform better than my old clarke.
I am not trying to seam weld, or make it look perfect just want weld that holds and reasonably smooth to save on grinding time. I use lots of "spots" then get them closer together after...
Hi Folks,
Before I put my new Parweld on ebay I thought to ask for some advice.
I bought a new Parweld xte171 as an upgrade for an old gasless clarke mig.
I am running 0.6mm wire and 9L/min argon gas.
I find the machine far too powerful for car restoration work, it blows holes in new metal...
I thought about an inverter but was unsure about the long term reliability of them.
It was difficult to choose and I would prefer a more portable welder but the quality units seemed to start around £500
At least I know this welder has more capability than I do so I can only blame my poor welding...
Thanks for all the helpful advice. I have flashback arrestors.
I was curious as to what causes the backfiring, such as worn seals/parts, I am sure it was better in the past.
Im lookng at new kit now. What size nozzle would you suggest for car bodywork around 1mm thick?
