Absolutely no reason for this photo other than the sun came out.
That's about as far as I'll get with it before I take it to Stafford in a couple of weeks. I'll be up on the balcony with OSS, so if anyone's going say hello.
You're right, and if it was an essential requirement or in the unlikely event I needed something like that for a customer job then I would shop around, compare prices and see who does what. In this case though it was just a 'nice to have' idea for a bit more mobile bench space and frankly if it...
I only buy metal in hobby quantities and Rapid Metals Redditch is 10 minutes away so I can collect. Any other trade type places are the other side of the city centre for me which is 30 minutes to an hour away depending on time of day so for the quantities and frequency they usually work out...
Rapid Metals cut to the lengths required. I use them as they're close handy for collection and given that I rarely need anything beyond stuff for the lathe or odd bits for something it's convenient. The other issue I have currently is that a length that size won't fit in the workshop. :laughing...
It's not loads more to get another bike lift. If I use the one I have now with the side extensions left on, and add another it'll give me more flexibility in the workshop.
The 'frame' is all 80mm square 5mm wall box section so :-
4 of @ 1500
6 of @ 500
4 of @ 750
and the top is 2 of 750 x 900 x 6mm sheet, plus four decent quality braked castors.
Sturdy enough to take some bashing of things, strong enough to take some heavy stuff, heavy enough to not bounce...
I've been looking into what additional equipment I'll need when I move. So I thought I'd price up the materials and to make another steel bench the same as this one I made previously will cost £1,000 in materials alone! No, that's not a typo. :o :vsad:
The internals will be pretty special, MTC lock up clutch, heavy duty back plate and rivets, welded crank with straight cut primary gears, Cosworth low comp pistons, bored out to 1170, heavy duty head and crank studs, specially made high ratio oil pump gears, etc etc. I won't be going crazy with...
It's going to look the absolute nuts wrapped around those freshly painted cases. Sadly with all the workshop hoo-ha and everything else going on it'll be a while before it gets built, just got to be patient I suppose. :vsad:
For added interest and provenance I may build this on to a different frame when it gets built up. I have an ex-Pip Higham frame with his name and the Village Bike Shop address on the old V5. It's completely trigger's broom but it just adds a bit of back story.
He does really high quality work, which is why it made sense to just give him the bike with dummy cases and let him do it start to finish rather than get bits from here and there, then get someone to weld it up etc.
Some more work in progress pics from the welderist. Now that it's all married up the slash cuts can be made, then weld, dress, clean, oil fittings, carb and I should be able to collect it back end of next week.
