Jack,
Spring dimensions as promised. Both are conical and are not particularly stiff. If you need I can make a measurement of the spring rates for you but I suspect that this isnt critical.

Jack,
Ill get some measurements for you later today. Yours looks to be a much more useful design with the air tank included! The old adverts are quite something...I might have to see about making up a 'sundries box' to go on mine.

Ton-up, thats the plan!
I temporarily connected the motor and capacitors with chock blocks and it started just fine, so those caps are ok (or ok enough) then. I shall use them and keep an eye on it. So far I've cleaned and repainted the black-painted parts. The motor needs some cork gaskets...
Brightspark,
Thats a fair point..so I went and checked! According to my admittedly very cheap component tester, the caps have 35 and 42 picofarads capacitance, orders of magnitude below the 30 microfarad rating. Now they aren't short-circuit but might be at 230V however!! So i'm inclined to...
I spotted this compressor amongst a load of scrap, clearly left out for the scrap metal fairies to remove....I couldn't leave it there could I? The owner of the house said I was welcome to it and that it had been in use six months ago in a garage running tyre changing equipment....
