For anyone reading this, seems obvious now but if you’re taking pictures or videoing welding remember to keep your phone safely out of harms way.
I’ve just noticed a couple of tiny spatter marks on me screen.
Just thought I’d post a quick vid of me welder in action after the mods.
I’m still learning and haven’t used it for any real length of time but it seems good now.

Thanks for the replies,
@tom2207 Yeah somebody else mentioned using a backer, think they said brass though. Can get me hands on plenty of bits of ally, will give that a go.
@gaz1 Unfortunately the only area I have to practice in is outside the garages at the back of me flat.
I do have a garage...
So I had another go today with mixed/annoying results, but I am learning.
In the previous pictures I had cut a second piece of metal and angled the edges so it fitted almost perfectly in the hole.
I’ve been informed that for butt welds a small gap to fill is preferable.
As the bit on the...
I have read that the gas doesn’t go off but can separate and just needs a good shake up/roll around on the floor before use, happy to bow to people with more knowledge/experience than me.
Gonna give it a go anyway got nothing to lose but a bit of time.
I have looked into getting a proper bottle...
Thanks for the quick replies.
I do have some solid 0.8 wire and a disposable bottle of gas that has been lying around since I got the welder 10+ years ago, I’ll have a go at setting that up tomorrow.
I don’t have any indoor space I can weld in so am welding outside, how much wind is too much for...
So after carrying out some mods on my old Cosmo 130 (thanks to a thread on this site) I have finally got round to doing some practicing on a now spare car door courtesy of the Mrs poor spacial awareness.
0.8 flux core on lowest setting.
My thoughts are:
1. I think I should have...
Got enough to top the battery up:laughing:
Just have to hope it holds a charge now.
Not holding out much hope with the voltage starting soo low but I am using a pulse charger which has a low current refresh setting.
No second bearing but.
Opened the valves up again pumped all the old fluid out (not that old, still had the leftover fluid in the garage from about 6 months ago) cleaned everything again put back together filled with new(ish) fluid.
Working again now :dontknow::laughing:
Bit late to carry on so...
Just noticed what might be a second bearing type seal under where the sprung one seats when I zoomed in on one of the pictures.
Will have to have a root around and see if there is a second bearing under the first or if it’s just a trick of the light.
Rain stopped play, my boy was building race car tracks next to me so we threw everything in the garage had a break in his tent and watched Bolt in me phone.
There is definitely debris in something, from this seal.
I’m fairly sure this is the plunger from reservoir valve section and the non return from ram is this one—->
Gave them all a clean out but it didn’t change the operation of the jack.
Can anyone confirm my thinking or give me a clue...
Managed to carry on a bit with the emergency jack supplied by Vauxhall.
(Hate these things)
Gave it a quick brush off and noticed this
That gap can’t be right surely
Compared it to the other side of the van, oh dear!
Will have to replace that.
