It was powered from a rotary phase converter.
I can’t find the name plate. It appears to either be where it can’t be seen or it’s gone.
yes Brightspark I have. It behaves the same. As I’ve written in the posts above.
Hi Chris,
I have done that, I can’t remember the figures now but they were all pretty much the same. And the terminals to earth gave nothing.
I have discovered that if The headstock is in neutral the motor will spin up but very soon, like 10 seconds the thermal cut out kicks in. Even set to...
Pete,
yes, tried the phase converter on the mill and it has no issues starting it.
I have wired the lathe motor direct to the phase converter. It behaves as explained above.... no different. It even bogs down the Idler on the phase converter when I start the phase converter. If I keep the...
So,
ive pulled the brake off, it’s an electromagnet type. It does not however appear the be the problem.
with it off the motor spins freely and smoothly. Bearings are good, no play on the shaft.
however when the lathe is started the motor makes a fraction of a turn then stops and sits there...
I think Pete has it. There is 3 core wire coming out of what appears to be sealed brake unit on the end of the motor.
The wires are coloured earth, blue and brown. They you one to each of the motor terminals.
I think until I get a chance to test the brake itself I’m at a bit of a standstill!
Thanks Pete, I’ll have a look when I get a chance got a busy week ahead.
it sat for 3-4 weeks before reaching me but in that time it was covered up outside waiting to be collected to quite possible the brake has got stuck on.
No progress as yet guys, been at work all day. Only just finished and I don’t have it In me to go poking around in it tonight.
Funny the brake should come up.
Thinking about it last night and today I think it must be the cause of the problem. Why else would the spindle be trying to turn but not...
I would appreciate that memmeddu.
I had a look and it looks like the name plate is either gone or on the far side of the motor where it can’t be seen.
currently I feel I’m no further along than I was at the start of the day.
If I get time tomorrow I’ll take a video of trying to fire up the...
Got a picture of the motor terminals.
There are a second set of wires going to the terminals, these go to what I’m assuming(maybe incorrectly) is a brake on the end of the motor.
thank you all so for for your help. I’m beat as up early for work this morning so am going to pack it in for the...
So,
using the continuity setting on my multi meter also shows ohms.
There is continuity across all 3 phases from the contactor to motor.
Checking all of them shows 6.9 to 7 ohms across 2 and .2 to .3ohms on the third.
does that make sense? If so what is it telling me?
the readings are the...
Doing a wiring diagram is beyond me I think.
I have a feeling I’m going to have to try and find someone to look at it as it’s getting more and more over my head.
How do I check whether the phases are getting to the motor?
move dragged the lathe out and have accessed the motor, I have the cover off the electrical box there.
The wires coming out of the bottom of the 2 fuse holder are indeed cut off. They look like they’ve been like that for some time. I had thought that they were to do with the original 110 transformer that’s no longer in there.
I think it’s time to break out the multi meter again.
I had noticed that too. They should be 20a like the one that’s there. The bottom of the fuse holder says 500v so obviously high voltage.
I know they’re not they’re but it was operational when it was disconnected and removed. The seller says they unplugged the 110 from the transformer and cut...
