Based on the machine screws that came out of the vice, they're BSW or UNC (as have same thread pitches). Some research shows the thread profiles are slightly different, but for the non-critical application of holding some jaws in place the BSWs are working fine!
I picked up this Record 24 a couple of weeks ago as my first vice. I wanted a big heavy one as I don't have a proper bench setup, so needed something with enough mass to hold work without being bolted down.
I've stripped and re-oiled everything, putting my new manual impact driver to use to...
I purchased the 3M 7502 which allows me to wear my glasses, and fits under my welding mask. For any grinding I keep the respirator and glasses on and switch to a full-face shield...
Thanks for the advice all, a few good tricks to try on it this weekend too.
Bolting/plates/pliers are all great ideas for grounding.
I had asked about rod polarity just to establish whether the extra heat from DCEP would be beneficial or risk warping (considering I'll be removing the head so...
The steel exhaust header bolts on my motorcycle are extremely corroded and either have no head, or I expect they'll round out.
I'm planning on drilling their heads off to release the pipes and allow me to remove the cylinder head to work on it off the bike.
Before taking it to a machine shop...
The figures quoted are the supply needed to max out the machine. If you're only running at lower powers, you could use a smaller supply.
E.g. I put a 16A plug on my 175A MMA welder, but then use a fly-lead to run it from usual a 13A socket as don't have the 16A supply yet. This just means I...
Agreed, saw it mentioned in another thread but haven't seen many reviews on it.
Thought about doing a DIY repair too, but if I can get my money back on the old helmet I might as well take the opportunity and put it towards something that'll last longer.
I've currently got a SIP Meteor 2300 (https://www.toolstation.com/sip-meteor-2300-automatic-welding-headshield/p32517?searchstr=sip%20welding), but the headstrap has always been a bit cheap and unsurprisingly part of it snapped the other day.
I should be able to return it under warranty, so am...
To be honest I'll probably never be using the machine at full whack. I wanted the higher maximum power so that it'll be running at its mid-range most of the time putting less stress on the components, with the extra power there if I ever need it.
However, based on the 125A @ 13A, and 175A at...
Thanks for the comment, since my post I actually settled on the R-tech, but your post definitely would have helped!
I've only used it once so far before it got too cold outside, but it's a much nicer machine to use than the buzz box I'd rented before.
Only using 2.5mm rods on it so far on a...
After some great advice in my last thread about getting an MMA inverter (https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/mma-inverters.85143/), I realised that I should be paying more attention to warranty than duty cycles etc as a hobbyist.
From that discussion I was choosing between the Parweld...
I'm in Bromley, which unfortunately is as far opposite to there as possible!
All of this GYS talk has got me looking at them again. The 160P which is within my budget seems very similar to the E160 with the exception of not having lift-TIG functionality. Is there anything else that I'm missing...
That's reassuring, thanks for all the help.
Now I just need to decide between the XTS 162 and the GYSMI E160 that's still slightly tempting me. Excited to get my first machine anyhow!
@Tom Orrow L thanks, I completely understand your point, I'll stick to the well known brands with good support. One final query as I just want to be sure before taking the plunge, but do you think a 160A machine would be suitable, or will I be missing something by not going for a slightly higher...
@Tom Orrow L, I'd looked at the GYS machines on your store, but they didn't seem to offer much more in the way of specs for the extra money to my untrained eye (e.g. low duty cycle of 19% @ 160A / 60% @ 90A). Or is the benefit simply a more robust machine?
The higher top-end current and high...
After some great advice in a previous topic, I'm now looking into getting my first welder!
Originally I intended on getting a MIG machine, but as I'll only be working outside for the foreseeable future, and welding thicker materials, MMA seems to be the way forward.
I plan on welding up to...
Appreciate the quick responses everyone, some really useful information!
@tommullin, probably should have proof read that :ashamed: I'll check out those online calculators, and it'll probably be a question for the electrician but if I go 4mm extension surely the initial consumer unit to...
