Thanks Stuvy. I manoeuvred the workpiece around such that most of the welds were done on top of a horizontal surface and the fillet welds done with the second face vertical.
Thanks for your feedback Kent. What you're saying sounds spot on; whilst a few of the bits of spatter simply knock off, others are there to stay unless I get the grinder out.
Thanks Pedrobedro, your comments regarding the dust has definitely helped ease my mind. I was worries that I might have an issue with gas delivery.
Faster travel seems to be the way forward suggested by many so thanks for that advice too!
Thanks very much for the feedback, I'll give some of what you say a try. There's every chance I have the power too high as my biggest worry is a lack of penetration. That might explain why I'm travelling too slowly as well. I'll try knocking down the power, upping the feed and travelling a...
In terms of slag, I don't believe there is any though I stand to be corrected.
With regards the tip stand-off, I'd guess I'm probably running about 5-7mm from the joint.
Great stuff, thanks.
Nope, I'm using the Ar/CO2 mix. I'm not 100% certain I'm getting great coverage though. The welds themselves seem nice and silver in appearance but immediately around them I get a brownish dust covering. It soon brushes/wipes off so I'm not sure if that is normal or not!?
Hello all! It's been a little while since I last posted and I've done my best to get some more practice in when time has allowed.
I've attached a couple of images of my latest practice runs and I'm keen to get some feedback if you'd be so kind
I can see that there is a lot of spatter and I was...
Thanks very much. I've been practicing quite a bit and I'm definitely starting to get much more consistent - 1st welds of the week usually leave a lot to be desired though!
I'm pretty sure it's 1mm wall thickness (I haven't measured). It just some scrap metal from a desk I saved from the skip at work. I just prepped it by removing the paint with a flapper wheel and cut down to small test lengths.
Hopefully most of the welds I'll be doing should be on clean metal as...
Great stuff, thank you very much for the speedy replies!
I'll keep my eyes peeled for some of those. I'll also keep watching the local auctions for the Sash ones, too.
Hello all,
I am a newcomer to the world of MIG welding with the ultimate ambition of building a spaceframe chassis. Being early on in my journey, I am still in the process of collecting tools etc. One area I am lacking in is clamps. Aside from a few G-Clamps I have nothing.
Now I realise this...
Haha, I think I've already started down that path. I can't stop eyeing up the empty spaces in the garage and trying to figure out what type of tool-based treasure I can fill it with.
Yes, I've been weaving up an down a little. I have tried to do so with a curved sawtooth - rightly or wrongly. I'll give it a try without the wiggle. Thanks for the advice
Thanks Gaz. Unfortunately I'm still very inconsistent. The rear face of that tube has a nice blow hole in it :vsad:
Most practice so far has been in the form of reading forums and watching YouTube. I've only spent two afternoons in the garage with the torch in hand. I'm well and truly hooked...
Last week I eventually managed to cobble the last few components needed to safely fire up my newly purchased (but 2nd hand) Clarke 151EN welder and start laying a few beads down. I've never welded before so I'm very excited and definitely in that stage of blissful naivety.
Anyway, once I got my...
Hello all,
So here I am, a complete novice in the field of MIG welding - having only ever held a torch once at school approaching 20 years ago!
After many years of longing to do so, I have recently decided that now is the time for me to build a single-seat racing car...from scratch. I have a...
