Hi,
CO2 used to be all the rage in heat/vent fab shops years ago. 2 reasons; cheap and for up to 2mm thickness penetration absolutely fine. As the years have gone on as i know you'll be aware Argon/CO2 mixes introduced for exactly the reasons you have seen i.e. surface weld finish, uniformity...
Hi,
You could try Aluminium cleaner 101 from elmer wallace good company, (used them loads in the past) here's the link: www.elmerwallace.co.uk/details.asp?ID=61.
Arrate woody,
Nice part of the world is Leek but the fence is high owd! Hope all goes well with PCB. If you get stuck have a chat with Paul Kirkland at WIRS they have a couple of really good engineers Dave and John) in Wolves. I haven't seen much beat them and if it does it's usually because...
Hi, just to clarify things,
Power source and earthing
The normal practice in the UK has been to provide a separate earth connection to the workpiece, so that, in the unlikely event of an insulation breakdown between primary and secondary circuits, the fuses will blow. However, the separate...
ayup woody 'ow at owd? sounds like a stokie accent if so ditto. I have used Arc Welding Services in the past for board repairs so you are in good hands, also;

Hi,
nice to know the info helps, if you require any information on welding gases, electrodes, wires, or electrodes all you have to look or ask for is the manufacturer's Material Safety Data sheet commonly known as an MSDS. That will give you all the relevant details and the manufacturer is...
Hi,
The main gas produce from the arc is Ozone and as previous posters have said the main gasses are asphxiants. With regard to fume there is an occupational hazard from zinc fume fever (Like a Heavy dose of flu, and I mean really when you get it properly) as a result of welding galvanised...
Hi Steve202,
Shade 12 is a bit on the dark side (may the force be with you) for me for an all purpose application. I find it very difficult to see the joint line on good fit ups so there would be a tendency for me to wander all over the place!! Bit like Friday night!! Personally I would have...
Hi,
Don't want to teach granny to suck eggs butI think it's important to clarify that what is sometimes commonly referred to as the earth lead should be correctly termed the welding return lead, which is part of and completes the actual welding circuit. Both the machine and the workpiece...
Hi,
I think you will find that if you are more than 6 foot away from the arc there will be no effect on the eye. There are articles on this effect, the TWI etc. THe Health and Safety dudes seem to want curtains everywhere "the significant risk" factor.
Hi,
Most if not all helmets "rest" at shade 3 which is a commonly used lens in "anti flash glasses. I believe that the lens should be chosen with the current range and welding process both taken into consideration and that TIG welding produces the more intense arc. This is not to say that...
Hi,
Don't know which area you are from but you could do worse than try a call to Welding Star (Wilkinson Welding) in Manchester and find out who their nearrest supplier to you is. Their torches and spares are good quality and reasonably priced. I have used and sold them for the past 15 years...
Hi Malc,
Realised that after I posted!! Look before you leapthey say!! I still feel that its the rectifier although if the connections to the rectifier are loose, oxidised or have been overheated, this will give high resistance at that connection and cause the fuse to blow as well!!
Sorry for...
Hi,
Sad to say that it sound like the rectifier has died, blowing fuses like no tomorrow is the usual sign. You can get spares and it isn't a difficult fix.
Regards Steve

Hi Buster,
Depends how proficient you want to be and if you want to do it professionally. Companies may and can insist on proficiency to BS 4872 and BS EN 287. One of your local colleges may run a part time evening ABC welding course or similar which (depending on the level you take) will...
