Thanks... Really glad I gave it a go now. Although looking around now for other things to make using the welder
Slim, for £50 I can't grumble... That said if it was me driving the dammed thing, it'd be going back to the coaters
Just wanted to say a massive thank you for all your help chaps. Massive respect for welders and metal workers, what a huge amount of hard work involved with building stuff out of it... I really had no idea how much was involved. 4 solid weekends I was at this, full days.... On my second rage...
Ooh of course! I was thinking the filings were slag haha!!! It's the filings I was talking about... I'm now sweeping up often to remove any chances of contamination. Hats off to you guys, this is hard work... Been at it since 9 am until 6.30pm... same again tomorrow. Getting better at the welds...
He was welding big stuff, I'll have a look for a mask tonight and get one ordered in that case... At the minute I'm placing the gun then dropping the mask, which isn't ideal.
The flatting, I'm still only using my first disc. Seems to be lasting. It's not ideal but my welds aren't good enough...
Cheers Dan, really appreciate the advice. This one's a fixed lense, I can just make out the weld area when it's lit up, so presume that is dark enough if it's working for me? Or would you say it's critical to get something better?
Here's the latest, two frames made up, perfectly aligned thanks...
I had considered but from what I could tell, unless you go into three figures, it's not worth bothering? Unless you have a different experience? The one I have is from a retired welder who can't help me until next weekend. He's only ever used these... Guessing my direction looks a bit out haha...
I've only got one bad eye, but that's hardly noticeable compared to most. Driving only usually....
I am chamfering them with the flap disc...
The wind is hardly noticeable here, is it still likely to affect?
Just done my first actual weld for the cage. Best one of done by far! Flattened...
Ooh I get it now, lots of cutting prepping and finishing....
Latest welds using push method. Gonna rig a light up as think main problem is I can't see where I am going and have light behind me in garage door area
Mine should be up for sale in 3 weeks, depending on how I get on. :)
I'll keep posting as I can only improve, and with your expert guidance :D. Only been at it an hour. This weekend will be intense, learn and get some frames together. 3 frames to build and hit my first minor complication, the...
Haha no worries Dan, suppose it being a different brand to mine, might not help. I've strayed a bit upwards from the manufacturer suggestions, they just didn't las flat enough welds... Or enough metal.
Angelwolf, I have tried breaking up what I've done already, it's certainly strong enough so...
Definitely a huge difference there.... I feel I'm a bit behind your first weld... Not made easier by 20mm box ... I have seen to tack the corners then fill the gap, which I was going to go tomorrow.
Mine are pull welds so will give push a go. I know zig zag is supposed to cover up bad technique...
I'll do that tomorrow, cut a few more pieces and have a go at those, concentrating on the mitres. If I can get those right I'll be able to do the end to side bar easily I reckon
Thanks Dan, very helpful... I've tried to step back a bit, after seeing the splatter. Then get drawn back in as the metal gets pushed apart, then I end up with bigger holes to fill - I'm going to follow the tacking suggestion about to try and solve that... So your saying go for the joint side on...
It's volts.....
Yep, I'll give it another go tomorrow, best to flat with angle grinder flap disc or grinding disc? Presume the latter....
What about technique, do you push or pull? Straight line or side to side?
Seen that 3/4 inch is about right?
What about splatter in the nozzle, is this a problem or just holding too close?
Also are my settings in the ball park, 10L gas, 90 volts, 2/5ths wire speed
Ooh and school boy error, laziness but now realise I can't miss this. None of those joints are...
