Cheers Brad - appreciate the advice, I should have mentioned I began around 8l/min, just moved up incase coverage was at fault.
Off I trundle to buy pure argon!
Thanks very much guys, glad its something simple!
I was so sure I'd previously been using some argon/CO2 mix from Air Products with the CEA, but clearly I'm a wally! :ashamed:
Off to the gas supplier I go!
Many thanks all
Ollie
Hi all,
I've not posted here for years, but am a long time lurker.
I'm a design engineer by trade, but have been TIG welding for the last 6/7 years for the odd job required every month or so for my employer. Parts have all been stainless, much of it textured around the 1.2-1.5mm thickness...
Hi Guys,
I've seen various threads online/youtube postings of peoples home made air dryers recently. I'm looking to use my compressor to spray and sandblast with occasionally, so this seemed like a good project.
This is only for hobby use, so I cant justify buying an expensive air dryer...
Many thanks for all the advice, I've finally got round to replacing the thermal cutout, and its now working exactly as it should do, even in the cold weather.
I did order a fresh nrv, although went to fit, realizing I'd bought one too small - doh! Ah well, a project for another day.
Cheers...
Hi Chaps,
I love reading peoples build threads on here, so I thought you might like a quick gander at some of my latest projects in the workshop.
I wish I had the time to detail every decision made on my projects, but hopefully you'll enjoy these timelapses anyway!
Ollie
Hi Guys,
Many thanks for all your advice, I'll be going home for Christmas at the end of next week so will give the compressor a more thorough look over then while I'm back. I've ordered bits to do the following:
Change oil for correct grade
Replace NRV
Replace current overload protector...
Hi All,
Many thanks for your help, I've had a busy day tinkering around with the compressor today.
First off, I ensured that both the motor and cylinder were free to move - which they were. I also checked the tension, which was similar to the alternator belt on my car - I assumed this was...
One final one! I was told that the seller had this compressor directly connected to a 16a breaker. When prepping it for sale and attaching the 16a plug, could it have been wired the wrong way round, causing the motor to spin the wrong way, and therefore cause the pump to have to pump against the...
Just a quick brain fart before i head to bed. I believe this compressor was used by the previous owner as part of a sprayshop install. If there was ever a drier fitted between the cylinder and tank, after being removed for sale, could the flexi pipe and check valve for the compressor have been...
Hi all,
Ive not posted here in years, but am a frequent lurker. Ive recently purchased a second hand compressor from ebay which looked like a great spec/price for my needs.

I got it delivered on a pallet and...
Ive gotta agree here, although it might be easy just to think, "oh its only 5 mins grinding" or whatever (weve all been in a rush and done it), how long does it really take to pick up a pair of goggles?
A few months ago I was grinding away wearing goggles, although they were just some old...
Hi, thanks for all the replies, and sorry for the delay in answering. I have contacted a local firm regarding powercoating in yeovil who I have heard are fairly good, although they wanted £60 to coat both fork and frame which I thaught was rather steep, given I can get a painted respray for £50...
Hi, I have a 1980's road bike frame and wanted to spray paint it using rattle cans in white, although having had a white frame before it shows all the sirt in scratches and chips etc therefore wanted to go for a more robust and duarble alternative. Does andyone know of any powder coating firms...
Yes, the one which came with my arc welder is simply a spring loaded electrode holder which for most jobs is pretty pants. I now have a twist one which allows for a much better grip on the rod as well as being much more durable. personally tho I prefer to use a slag hammer rather than use the...
Hey again, due to some rather anoying computer problems I've been off for a while but am finally back online, I did some welding after college and Im using a clarke 190TE TE with an auto dark helmet, brass earth and a better electrode holder, as the spring loaded one was pretty pants. :) Im not...
...And I thaugh my imagination was active, sounds like you have a reall good lineup for projects there gasmark5! Im working on a minimalist (mild steel + marine ply) chair for product design at the mo.. Sorry for the late reply, do you think computer problems go with welding, or is it just...
Actually I've been out earlier to have another go at welding, this time using some 20mm x 3mm steel bars. I've found some 2.5mm rods and after some fiddling with the amps managed to get some nice runs when butt joining the two pieces along their length. I also had a play at welding some 45degree...
Hey thats a coincidence, I have a mate who lives in Batcombe, the chances of that!! I live in glastonbury and went to my local fab shop for some metal yesterday, if its any help its called Bannel Engineering and is located in Beckery Glastonbury (around the morelands area).

Hi, for a college project I need to be able to stick weld 3mm x 20mm x 20mm mild steel angle, this will be mostly at 90 and 45 degree butt joints. However although new to welding I am not sure what size rod I whould be using, or the gap between the angle pieces in my joint for maximum weld...
