Thanks for the advice guys. I generally pick things up pretty quickly and after watching nearly every tig vid on YouTube thought I had a good idea of what to do. It looks remarkably easy when a pro is doing it on a video but is definitely a different story doing it myself. I abandoned the idea...
Just looking through the forum there and saw Richards sticky about learning tig, some amazing info in there and very well explained. When I was taking up mig I hunted the forum for tips and advice, I hadnt done the same in the tig section.......doh!! Doing it now though
Also I thought a red tungsten was stable at welding all materials but after having a look online it seems I was wrong. Would it make that much of a difference?
No i didnt back purge it, I thought you only needed to back purge stainless?
And the car is a Integra type R that I've stuck a Garrett 3071r turbo on , makes 450hp at 14psi, it's a handful lol
Hi guys, been a long term lurker on this forum, also done quite a lengthy post on an old car I was replacing both sills on with sheet steel, without the help from here I probably would've thrown in the towel halfway through as I felt in over my head for a first project but all the comments and...
Wagon sailed through mot, well 1 advisory for a tyre being close to the limit but it's the only useable wheels I had lying around. Just racked up about 100 miles in her and she drives spot on, mega happy. The plan now is to use it as a practical daily then next year taking it to France in March...
Sorry for the massive delay guys, progress had slowed down a bit as general life was getting in the way. The quote to fill and spray it was frightening so decided to tackle it myself. I skimmed over all the joins lightly with fibreglass filler to provide some water resistance from behind the...
The passenger sill is pretty much finished, wasn't anywhere near as hard because I didn't have to make the cut so high up on the wagon so only had 1 gentle curve to worry about. Also tackled the rust bubbles round the arch on the passenger side. Still need to sort the rust bubbles on the drivers...
So this epoxy primer, can I just buy it in a rattle can and apply it before I take it to the body shop??
Been making some more progress, I grinded back the passenger sill and there's was a load of little patches that I'd need to make which I think woulda been more hassle than replacing the...
Luckily the rear wheel arches already have an access hole, about an inch in diameter covered by a rubber grommet and the dynax stuff comes with a long tube to spray it in. Just seems like a gamble as to whether I've got it all covered or not.
Needing a bit of advice guys, at what point do you call the repair good? The panel is in, it's solid and I'll happy with it but these pin holes are a nightmare!! I re-weld them and grind them down but another one appears. Would take ages to cover them all and I'm also worried about grinding the...
Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciate it. In hindsight I should've gave the young fella some gloves but he was just bursting to have a go. Whilst I'm delighted how it turned out, the sill took me the best part of a day to shape, and played with it some more the next day. I find that if...
Sorry guys it's been a bit quiet on my part but only because I've been working on the wagon. Got the sills to a shape I'm almost happy with and got it welded to the car. I managed to make the contour by propping the panel on lengths of wood, welding a spark plug socket to a 3/8 extension with...
On the last pic my finger is on it, I need to bend my sheet in towards the car again then immediately sharp bend upwards, it's quite a tough bend to do on such a long sheet without any fancy tools
I've downed tools for the day while I have a think about this. I'm not sure what you mean pigeon?? I'm having a tough time trying to shape that contour into my new sill so I'll come back to it tomorrow with a fresh head on. Thinking it might just be easiest to ignore that contour and have a flat...
Thanks for the link pigeon, I've copied pretty much the way you've done it but minus them funky ass socks!! I'm a bit stuck, there is a sharp bend in the panel which I will either need to replicate (which will be difficult) or just cut higher up on the car and weld the panel on as is minus that...
I've never even heard of that website before, cheers for that, although I'm not sure if my phone is loading that website right as it's quite hard to understand/navigate the stepwagon section.
That's my plan if I can't get a sill, just a 2m length sheet, bend a flange to clamp it onto the car...
Little update, I phoned Honda regarding replacement sills, they only have 1 side showing up on the system with no price beside it which means they've been discontinued. Phoned a local body panel repair place and as I thought he'd never heard of a stepwagon, asked if I could show him the profile...
