Update, finally got round to painting the cart.
After using it for a while, i welded on a torch holder, hook for earth cable, and some side rails, which are for security and act as a handle to save me bending down to move it.
Ps, i didnt bend them, they were just laying about and were...
The posts are 50x50x3mm, the gate is 50x25x2.5mm with 50x3mm on the front to create a 25mm lip for the wood to go against (so looks like 50x50 from the front, if that makes sense.
Then used 20x20x3mm angle on the rear to sandwich the wood. If it rots ill replace with composite or something...
After much faffing about managed to get the gate made, AND fitted!!! =D
The old one was like cardboard, so anything was an improvement.
Enjoyed this project, a lot of thought had to go into how hinges etc work, the welding side of it wasnt too bad.
The wood is decking boards, not the best...
Dont start tempting me with a Tig, its took me 3 years to buy a Mig!!! =D
Ill trim the axels off eventually, and the hooks etc, still working on where i need them, also going to put a torch holder on somewhere too.
Had a few weeks practise now, learn that doing a "job" is a lot different to laying beads on the flat.
Some welds were excellent, some were pants!
Bought a welder initially to learn, but needed to make a side gate. Needed a cart also as i found myself limited where the workbench could go, and...
OK, tried a few different settings but found that power 3.5 (same as before), and wire feed 4.5 (was 5.5), seemed a lot better.
I tried it on a joint and seemed ok (in my newbie eyes), even did a vertical down which seemed to go better than i thought it would.
I left a gap the size of the...
Might be a daft thing but... when i start get an arc, i start travelling straight away, i guess im supposed to wait until the pool forms before moving on. This would explain the way the start of the weld seems higher then slopes off.
Thanks for the wisdom Tom
Martin
Many thanks for the quick feedback, the one on the left was my last one as i run out of space, so tried the cursive "e" thing.
Had a go at filling the hole too which was about 6mm across.
I was thinking the welds were too high, if i reduce the wire speed would i need to lower the power too, or...
Tried some 3mm yesterday (with r-techs recommended settings), and thought there was lack of penetration - was using a long extension lead.
Today did a similar piece - with same settings, but on a 2.5mm^ shorter extension lead, in case this was limiting the power.
Anyway seems exactly the same...
Ok, less nervous today. Used a piece of 3mm (took the paint off today).
Tried marking out 50mm lines to try to get the travel speed, worked out to be about 6 secs for the 50mm - does this sound about right?, (weird how time and motion seem to disappear once the screen darkens)
Use the...
This is my first attempt on a piece of 2mm angle (settings: power 3 / wirefeed 4) - as per r-tech manual.
Seemed to make the right noises, so i guess it was an ok setting.
tip for future self: remove the paint from both sides of steel (yeh i know!!)
Just did straight (stringers?) pushing, no...
Hi,
Im totally new to welding (had a pop with a friends gassless for about 10mins), but always fancied trying to learn both mig and eventually stick.
Been registered on this forum for a few years, read a lot of websites, always watching youtube tutorials etc, and took until today to finally...
