Hi all, can anyone with a standard machine advise whether the wire feed unit is electrically isolated from the back board?
I replaced the standard unit a few years ago with a plastic drive assembly but due to suffering excessive burn back I have concluded that the motor which maxes out at 12m...
Has anyone that’s done the modification I’ve done found that the wire feed is too slow even on max so that the wire burns back to the nozzle all the time?
I fitted one of these:

Cheap as chips and seems to be doing the job. Replaces the motor and tension/feed assembly. You need to fabricate a tray to mount it in so that the wire can line up with the outgoing torch line.
Some beads on 3mm section
Front and rear shots of a butt joint and some beads on 1.5mm (?) sheet. Messing with settings. Decent penetration, minimal warpage and no burn through. Result!
Thanks for your replies. I got a Y size cylinder of argoshield light from BOC yesterday to replace the small disposable I was testing with. Replaced the wire liner, backed the tension off as much as I dare on the wire reel tensioner, ground the metal clean, ground the ends of the earth clamp and...
Thanks for the reply Rik. It sounds like a lot of work, and probably still won't give me a resolution. I did read in another thread about using an extension lead and voltage drop, I was certainly using an extension lead when I tried it. That may account for a few issues I was experiencing. I...
Hi all,
I bought a duff unit with what was supposed to just be a broken tension arm screw, but turned out to have stripped teeth in the gearbox. As I couldn't find replacement gears, I installed a generic 24V drive motor/tension assembly after fabricating a suitable box to offset it into the...
Hi all,
I'm in my welding infancy and am in my last couple of weeks of a C&G level 1 MIG course at Tameside college. My interest in welding has been brought about by the desire to start modifying a motorcyle, specifically the rear subframe on a 20+ year old Honda CB500 twin, to make a retro...
