Ok, I've been giving this lots of thought (and lots of googling) and what I've discovered is: paint/finishing terminology is bloody confusing!
Don't be annoyed but perhaps indulge me for a moment.
What if I were to, *cough*......lash on a fresh batch of cellulose?!
Time and cost are a big...
Thanks for getting back to me on this guys
So if I were to go down the 2k solid color route is the 1k celly base, once flatted back a suitable base for the 2k solid color?
I'll be repainting in the same tone so it'll just be the external/visible surfaces that'll be painted.
Hi guys!
I got great advice some years back when DIY painting my Triumph Spitfire. Some of that advice I did not take at the time to my detriment.
The process I used was as follows:
- Strip back to bare metal.
- 2K epoxy base coat applied, filler applied where necessary and then sealed again...
Just an update for anyone that may be interested. So I sourced some supplies from Morrells, a UHS polyester clear basecoat and a 'wet look' PU top coat; just what I was after.
Thanks for all the help and info :)
Thanks for the help and advice all.
Dcal, you put me on the right track, Morrells do a polyester lacquer! That's a great lead. I'm in Ireland but I believe they have a premises in Dublin so I'll be in touch tomorrow to find out more.
Keith, it's the high solids I'm after really, the polyesters...
Quick one....
Polyester clear coat or a 'polyester based' clear coat, does this mean anything to you guys or can anyone point me in the direction of where I might find such a product?
I've been searching online but cant seem to find much relating to it but I've heard of it being used in...
Hi all!
So I've been using an acrylic 2K clear as a finish for dashboards I'm producing, goes on beautifully and finishes even better!! A number of customers have asked me to replicate an existing finish of a dash they may currently have and/or seen and while I can get it close in terms or wood...
Thanks again guys.
I'm maybe looking or hoping for too much. I've been lucky in that I've been getting orders but my workshop is small enough so I'd like ideally to get them coated, flatted and finished asap and get them sent off.
I use cascamite powder resin glue for gluing the veneers down...
Thanks guys for the help and info. Just to give an example of what has happened to one of my dashes after only been in the car a month or so....
Not good and I feel rotten over it :(
Anyway, norsa, I should have said its a high build clear basecoat I apply first, flat that back (fills in...
Hi guys,
I know this is a metal work forum, more so than wood working but you guys have provided me with a lot of good information in the past, so I trust your judgement.
I've been making dashboards these past few months for vintage and classic cars, mostly Triumphs. Up to recently I've been...
Hi guys,
You might be able to offer some advice. I've been making dashboards for Triumph cars, theyre made from 12mm birch plywood and up to now have been supplied unfinished for the customer to add their own veneer etc.
I'm dipping my toes into veneering and the pnly thing I've to master...
Thanks again for the replies and info :-)
In my very limited paint experience I dont think its a reaction under the paint and more a case of bad prep on my behalf. The bonnet is GRP, it came off another Spit, so I flatted it back, repaired and filled some small damage, epoxy primed, high build...
Cheers guys.
Next issue now is getting a correct paint match :-\ It was a mixed color and I've only.a bare scraping in the bottom of the tin (enough for minor touch ups etc) so I guess I'll bring that and the car to the paint suppliers and see what they can do.
Ok, so flat back with 400 W&D to remove polish, scratches etc. Once theyre gone spot prime and onto 600 w&d? I flatted back the primer with 600 w&d initially before the top coat and it was pretty smooth and certainly not scratchy but then I may have gone too heavy and hard with 800 grit when...
Hi guys!
Been a couple of years now since I was asking about techniques and methods for spraying my Spitfire, this time round I'm looking to respray my bonnet!
I reckon I didnt lay down enough coats on it initially, or, I laid the coats on too thin. The finish was quiet orange peely so I...
Have yet to cut and polish the paint job, hopefully I can tackle it next week. Should be well hardened by then! Got the doors and bootlid sprayed also, as luck would have it I got a pretty decent smooth finish, very little orange peel (certainly not as much as the body tub/bonnet) but the...
Thanks for that. I thought a dual action was the thing to use for cutting and polishing?? At least in the vids I've seen they use DA's for compounding.
Brought her out into the sunshine at the weekend, orange peel aside.....I think it looks fantastic!! I found it difficult to get any work done I was stopping so often to admire it and hush off little flies or bugs that dare land on it!! :o:laughing:
When it does come time to cut back and...
