Hi Jim,
See you're local to me and I could well be up for a bit of guidance. Would have to be evenings or weekends if that's doable for you? Happy to provide some ale (and stop on a drink it with you as well :-)).
Exactly my target as well Jeff, just need to get the practice in. The other element to it is practicing on the bench is one thing, welding upside down on your back is going to be another thing altogether!
What age is your d turbo? I've actually got 2 205s a 1.9 on the road that needs welding work and another bare shell I'm also wanting to restore.
Very few 205s around with no rust anymore. Being galvanised they held out better than the equivalent ford and Vauxhall cars, but when you start to...
Working on a 205 GTI currently, but built an MK Indy a few years back after studing the Ron Champion Locost book so recognised the chassis form.
Are you a member of the Haynes Roadster and Locostbuilders forums?

Brilliant, just the feedback I was after.
I've been welding thicker stuff for a while, but only just started on thin sheet as I'm planning to restore a 205 GTI with plenty of rot.
There's definitely a thin line between good penetration and just blowing holes and I'm only on 1mm material so...
Hi All,
I've bee practicing welding sheet metal building up to a car restoration project. I'm using a Clarke 151TE with 0.8mm wire and Argoshield. Metal is 1mm Zintec with the coating ground back prior to welding.
This is today's efforts and I'd greatly appreciate comments and guidance...
Would that be a Locost or a Haynes chassis your starting there?
Welds look ok to me, but then I'm at the same stage as you in terms of relearning what I did a college a good few years ago.
As above you need to define the type of fit you need first. E.g interference fit, then work out your tolerances. Typically +0.xx/-0.00 for the hole and +0.00/-0.xx for the shaft.
Metals 4 U provide a service that suits consumer customers. I.e. small amounts and easy payment. I think they're OK on value for what they offer.
It's like Halfords, consumer focused but you pay for the service of being able to get what you need when you need it. A motor factor will be...
It's a Peugeot 205 on which I'm repairing sections of floor pan, some underside sections and if I can gain enough confidence a section of the OS A pillar. The original metal measures approx. 1mm on the floor pan, where I can check it. I suspect the A pillar is about the same.
Our metalwork...
Is there a metal supermarket near you? Not the cheapest, but they generally have what you need in reasonable sized pieces.
Failing that find a local fabricator and make friends with them. I have a local high who's happy to sell me bits and pieces for cash and biscuits.
Hi all
Been practising butt welding some 1mm sheet in preparation for some car body restoration.
Using the stop start technique to avoid blowing through.
How does it look front and back?
