In my ignorance , I'd have assumed it would be the same as Formula 1 race car standards before they were carbon ------------ everything either tig or braze ?
I found it frustrating having Arc'd for years plus other guys telling me I'd find it a doddle compared to Arc welding ---- I found it much harder to learn personally --- maybe '' old dog , new tricks applies '' ?
It's a 2lt Dunnell engine with sequential throttle bodies , big valves , race cams , pocketed pistons and all fully balanced , pushing out 231bhp and 185lbft .
I could weld some scrap corner joints and cut that to check penetration BUT the wishbones already made cost me too much time , notching , welding and threaded inserts = cash to cut up :(
I was travelling only just fast enough to prevent blowing a hole and penetration could be seen peeping down...
H'mm , got me worried now , however the original wishbones supplied by the kit manufacturer cracked right around the edge of the outer wishbone weld on the drivers side and that was just going onto the rumble strip at GURSTON hillclimb without actually hitting anything --- although I did once...
I bought this MIG because arc welding's so tricky on lightweight roundtube but none of my arc welds have ever broken.
They're are to go on a kit car weighing 600kgs . The previous wishbones I've made have been done with my 190amp arc welder and been on the car since 2005 (my car) and 2009 on...
Damn sight better than my own first hour on mig and I have been arc welding for 40 years on farm and landscape repairs , on and off --- not a pro by any means. I thought mig would be easy but found otherwise , mainly due to too many variables , how much volts , wire speed , gas , how high from...
Must be in the ' blood ' ---- that's as good a weld as I've managed over 40 odd scrap tries before welding anything important --- I need your tuition :clapping:
Best deal I got offered was being allowed to get on the VOLKSZONE contract with BOC (no I am not restoring a Beetle). I got an 8 inch x 3 foot tall bottle rented for £35 plus £25 for the gas and another fee of £2 for something --- anyway the whole thing amounted to £74 inc vat which will last me...
Thanks pedrobedro , I did try the gas at 12 to 15 at first. The torch was just making a mess , sort of aero chocolate looking . Only problem I have now is not blowing holes which I can manage not doing provided I just do 20mm stints . If I was a better welder perhaps I could use less gas and...
After posting questions on someone else's thread -- sorry , I have played around with my secondhand MUREX 186c mig which I bought to use on 16 gauge CDS 25mm roundtube and arrived at the best settings for my machine on this stuff.
It has 6 power positions but position 2 on any wire speed...
Whoops !!! sorry all round guys , I'm new on here but will watch out how I ask questions next time ---- a great source of knowledge here though :clapping:
resin
I use epoxy resin , a two part mix for bonding fibreglass and or carbon fibre which is set hard in a day easily but it is a pink finish . Sounds as though you're already sorted though ?
Thanks , I'll keep practicing Keith . Tried using 3 setting for power rather than 2 but 3.75 wire speed instead of 2.6 with 2 power. Got a better weld but my hand steadyness isn't there yet so ok on a bead around the tube but not good trying to weld the end of that tube to a threaded...
