I got a 2008 Impreza recently, and I spied what looked like a hint of rust poking out the side skirts so I took them off to have a proper tidy up and clean... Drat.
Became, double drat ...
Anyone in hemel Hempstead taking paid welding work?
Would love to tackle but I don't have suitable...
thanks, yes fully aware of that. Which is why I don't have enough time to do it myself! Thankfully replacement panels are readily available for the outer sill, not so much for any inner sill work that may need doing.
Any idea Rik of how many hours it would take to replace a mildly rusty sill...
I'm afraid thats just local prices. £60 an hour is actually quite cheap for a garage. My local dealer charges £95 an hour +VAT
Hence i am looking for a local welder to do the work for me :)
Its not about spending money. Its about getting good value. My local bodyshop will charge me £60+VAT an hour for welding. and its not even very good!
The car is a keeper, it just needs some TLC.
Thanks Rik,
Oh yes happy to pay. Just looking for a recommendation really or maybe someone even local who posts on here.
Its not a lot of welding, one sill needs doing is the most urgent job but I don't know how bad the inner sills are going to be until its stripped down hence I was looking for...
Not sure if I am allowed to ask but I am trying to find someone to help me with some welding I want to do on my MX5. I bought it as a project and realise I don't have the time to do the welding myself.
Prefer not to take to a random bodyshop as their prices can be way too high and and the...
Sounds like a good deal to me assuming its in good working order. The majority of stuff on eBay goes for high prices, couldn't find any bargains when I was looking.
I have a 160tm for work on my Jimny similar to what you have in mind. Should be OK but from 4mm upwards it will be starting to struggle, lots of prep will be needed to get good strong welds as I understand it but I am no expert and haven't used mine on my car yet. In theory as previously said...
Exactly this.
I ended up buying a box of offcuts from a place called metal mania on ebay, and got some other pieces I needed at the same time to share postage costs. Wasn't the cheapest option but easier than trying to go begging at fab yards... :ashamed:
I guess I was expecting to see more penetration on the back side, like the tutorial shows.
But should I not be expecting such penetration on thicker metal?
I think it depends on how long you want to run it at full power for. I was just using my clarke 160tm (150 amps) at full power on a domestic socket with no issues but I was only using it for short spurts of welding...
Thanks for the advice.
Just tried it on Max setting and penetration was a tiny bit better. (but not as good as I was hoping). Then I got a bit too close to the edge of the metal and blew a bloomin' great hole in it. So it looks like it does have plenty of power at the extremities of a piece...
Hi all,
Another boring first welds thread I'm afraid. Hoping some of you out there may be able to offer some pointers.
I've got a clarke 160tm and I've just been having a play.
On 2mm metal I was getting good penetration, but I've stepped up to 3 and 4 mm and I'm struggling a...
welcome along. I've got the same machine, seems like a good bit of kit (although I've only used it tiny bit).
So far seems really easy to use but getting everything right to produce a good weld is a little more fiddly. Must practise more!
