the thread on there is left handed and it looks to me like you have taken the shroud of by turning anti clockwise instead of clockwise and forced it off

i've just had the same problem with the same type of switch, mine are from a 12/24v battery booster
i just stripped them down cleaned and put them back together, they work like new now.
heres what they look like inside.
to clean the chamber after spraying just turn the air pressure down completely, loosen the aircap and put some clean thinners in the cup then pull the trigger in and slowly open the air regulator (this can be done at the gun if you have a cheater valve) open it just enough so you can hear it...

i,e you can let your policy run out and as long as you re-insure within two years you can still claim your NCB.

if all you are painting are smaller areas as you say, then it's worthwile getting a smart repair/touch up gun instead of a full size gun, ideal for painting single panels and getting into tight spaces such as engine...
