I've recently replaced the front end on my mini. If you haven't had any experience in fitting pattern panels then I would certainly advise you to buy original panels (I sent back 1 front panel and a wing and had them replaced with originals).
As everyone has said, trial fitting is the way to...
Some of the patches I've welded on my mini were also impossible to clamp in place. I welded a nail to the front of the patch which allowed me to hold it in place while tacking around it.
The other option I've heard about is to use a magnetic strip to hold it in place.

For some of my repair patches I've welded a nail to the patch so I can hold it while I'm tacking it in place. The nail is then easily ground off after.
That's right, the external seams at the back do get covered by a trim so don't need to look pretty.
At the front the seams are internal. Along the side of the wing the seam will be welded to the top of the inner wing, which is then covered by the bonnet.
Ok, so I've just finished playing around with my new spotweld shroud. I've posted a couple of pics to my website, you can find them at the beginning of "Day 24" at http://www.niandj.com
The largest of the three welds at the bottom had the best penetration, but I'm still not convinced by the...
As always, should've googled first...........

Very very useful website with instructions on how to spot weld with a mig.
Thanks for the reply!!
I'll be picking up a spotweld shroud for my mig today and will start practicing later.
I read on another forum that if you have a spotweld timer on your mig then you don't need to drill the holes to make a "spotweld". They mentioned cranking up the settings and using...
I've heard from another forum that I will be better off welding along the edge of the two seams to join the panels together and then applying seam sealer between the two panels from the other side.
Does this sound like a good way to proceed?
Hi all,
Thanks to the advice on this site I've started to get the hang of MIG welding and am actually enjoying it. I just find it a shame that most of the work is prep and the welding is over so quick!
After a lot of trial fitting I'm about ready to weld the front end of my cooper and...
A quick google came up with the following sites:
http://www.hobbyfanatic.com/kites/index.htm
or
http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=948#pid2999 (there's a link in the thread to a zip where someone translated everything to english  )
Hope that helps!
Thanks, I'll see if I can get my hands on some 0.6 wire before I get started. Bit of a shame though as I have a huge reel of 1mm, what would you normally use the 1mm for?
Believe me, I was also suprised at how much it had rotted. It had been in a minor front-end before I bought it and one of the wings was badly welded. I expected to replace the front of the car anyway, so it wasn't too much of a shock.
We have the same voltage over here and the welder (just...
Hi all,
I'm very impressed by the amount of great information on this website. I'm a complete newbie and about to take the plunge and buy my first MIG welder.
Last month I bought myself a mini cooper from 91 (as a project) and during the strip down I discovered more and more rust and...
