I met Mr Dibnah when I worked at his house just before the turn of the century, I did some decorating on his hall, stairs and landing, he seemed an ok sort of chap but didn't know him before then so don't know if he'd changed in any way, he showed me around the yard and the stuff he had there...
I've used oven cleaner myself, Mr muscle foam stuff if I remember correctly, or CIF ?
Sprayed it on, left it alone, have another look and if it looks like maybe another dose is needed then repeat,
No hard work involved
I'm no expert but if you go too coarse you might leave scratches that could show through the top coat,
If you bought the paint from the same source then they should be compatible so flatting with 600 grade shouldn't be a problem.
Hal
It looks like the paint you're scraping off is a vinyl Matt/silk, the new plaster should have had a thin coat of latex Matt to act as a primer, this would have soaked in a little bit and won't come off in sheets like that.
Sizing is usually a thin coat of paste or PVA solution and is best...
Thanks Pete, it was either have a go and see what I could do or buy an aluminium one for £550+
So reasoned that i'd nothing to lose, blasted for £30, steel £30 delivered, of which I only used a bit and other bits I had knocking about,
Hal
In no particular order the pics show, the top cut off, after blasting and finished article,
My welding won't win prizes for good looks but pressure testing shows no leaks.
Saved a few quid and shouldn't need any further work during my ownership
I always say no when I'm asked if I want Ice, fill the glass with it and then a drop of coke !
No thanks, it's pricey enough without paying for half a pint of frozen water.
Couldn't agree more, a good primer and ordinary gloss paint, or you could use synthetic from your local car paint supplier, main reason being that it dries quickly
I once screwed some 1/4" plywood over the window in our bedroom when I was working night shift for a few weeks, it worked well but Mrs HAL wasn't too pleased when she had to turn the lights on whenever she entered the room
There used to be a sort of plastic disc that Did all the masking for you, spray the silver then use the disc and spray the black,
Don't know if they're still around, mg specialist may help.
Do read the safety rules regarding this paint, you'll need air fed mask for starters.
The compressor supplying the air for this will need to be out of range of the painting area
It needs careful consideration before use.
The filler will definitely need priming and it's not a bad idea to do the whole car, you'll then have the same base to put the top coat on,
I'm a DIY sprayer
Here's my attempt at welding a nut to one end of the trailing arm of my suspension, the rose joint is screwed in and not welded.
I think it looks a bit like I've just run a ring of weld around the top but I can assure you that it's fused the two parts together.
OOPS, looks like I've put this in...
If she's going to be off work for a few weeks will her wages be covered ?
I know from past experience that not many private companies tend to have good sick pay schemes, money can be in short supply, especially this time of year.
Plus, sparkie should have been more careful where he leaves his tools
I've been thinking about that kind of thing on my restoration, some GRP parts that are painted black would look good in chrome and that looks like it might do the job.
I might end up having one made out of either alloy or even stainless, my only experience of welding alloy was at night school 30 years ago, never done stainless, there is a fabrication place quite close to where I live so might give them a call, I'm thinking of the easiest way
I'll still be...
The tank is unique to the Marcos,
the different steel may have more to do with the rust than laying up the car over winter then !
Thinking about it many classic cars are laid up over winter, do they suffer the same ?
The bit sticking up on the corner is not part of the tank
The triangular bit...
