Pics aren't great, but I've done the whole of the underneath of my Kombi in black POR15, after hearing good stuff about it on my club forum. You can see it was pretty cruddy before, mainly surface rust, which I cleaned up with a wire brush on my grinder, before painting. The stuff isn't UV...
Hi from a fellow vdubber! Had a beetle for 10 years which always needed welding. I lost heart when it needed previously done repairs doing again :( and with my first nipper on the way it got parted out. I got the bug again with a vengance after about 5 years, and now have an old Kombi, with...
Cheers for the advice guys. I've not plumbed in my big bottle of CO2 yet, still going on the little disposable bottle that comes with the welder! I had a play with a friends welder at the weekend, a Clarke 150 turbo running with an argon/CO2 mix, couldn't see that much of a difference, but we...
www.metwiz.com is highly regarded in VW circles... Although it doesn't teach you how to weld, it's a great site to see the lengths some people will go to get utter pups of old VW's back on the road!
Hello from a fellow VDubber :D
Very new to welding myself, so I'm asking questions rather than answering them.
I've got an old Kombi that's never been touched before now, and has spent all it's life getting sunburnt in Australia. What have you got?
What's a 'sig'? Is that short for signature? (Not been into forums for long, it was ages before I worked out what 'LOL' meant  )
So what's your problem with welding under cars then Neo?
I've got it up on 6ton axle stands, not perfect but any higher it'd be up in the rafters anyway. Hopefully wont have to do too much welding on my back...
Would love one of those rollover cage things, and a garage big enough to roll it over in!
Anyway, better get back to the grindstone...
Photoshop is great 8) If I could weld half as good as I could use photoshop I'd be a very happy chappy
(Commecial Illustrator by day, mainly digital stuff, and always 'ammending' photos  )
Most of the repairs on the Kombi are underneath, so hopefully I'll be able to get by...
That is a very clean Golf  8)
Since I've aquired a CO2 gas bottle all I've heard is not to use it
It's getting me by while I practice at least. Will it produce weak or unsafe welds though? From what I've heard it 'splatters' a lot more than an argon mix.
When I can...
Cheers Malc
At the moment putting the new outrigger in seems like it will be easy compared to taking the rotton one out  Never had to dismantle anything on a vehicle before so it's all new to me, but got there in the end. Hammer and chisel and grinder did most of the work...
Just taken an outrigger off the Kombi, which is spot welded to the chassis and top hat. I was going to drill a holes in the new outrigger and plug weld it into place, following the original spot welds, but all the photos I have seen of outriggers being replaced show beads of welds run along the...
Thanks very much
It's a blessing and a curse though...means prices are sky high :(
I should have bought one 15 years ago instead of my old Beetle  Oh for a crystal ball...
Just been offered this, he'll take £35 for it....

And he says getting it refilled isn't a problem....
Think it's a fair price with the regulater as well, as long as I can get it...
I think I've made my mind up....
An SIP migmate 130 turbo
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7556790029&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
No, not a 150... I was worried about it being 20amp, I like the fact I can plug the 130 migmate 13amp straight in. Might...
Not seen this, very handy, cheers Bodge 8)
some good tips on doing the door skins... will come in handy for me.
Checked out Practical Classic MIG review this morning, (flicked through it in the newsagents  ) it was a bit dissapointing to be honest, only 3 pages and not as thorough...
I saw this, its definatly on my list! Just be good to have a bit more info to hand though. I'll see how it compares to the Clarke 150 MIG and trolley from machinemart for price, if I get them at the VAT free evening I save a big wedge as well
If not these then its the 150 Migmate...
I liked the fact the 130's are fine on my bog standard garage sockets... I don't like the idea of pushing it with a 150... But it's an old Vdub with thicker than average metal... And peeps on here seem to manage fine with them...
If I do go for a more DIY aimed MIG without wheels I'll...
Cheers Malc, all these hints are helping me in the right direction! I've got a load of questions which I've just put in the discussion section, you've answered some already!
Right, I'm on the verge of buying my first welder, and spent a few hours on here last night, which has helped me loads. I just have a few questions before I spend my hard earned overdraft.
Here's what I need it for, a 1959 VW Kombi, good chassis but some ropey bodywork. Needs new sill on the...
