Nice job there, having spent years doing up my Vw T25, I can appreciate the work involved!
I've been using Lechler epoxy primer on mine up to now but my supplier here in Ireland has gone out of business so I can't get it anymore. I've just ordered some Jotamastic 87 so will use that for the...
I just sprayed the underside of my roof with the Lechler 29107 last week...
used a HVLP gun, 1.8mm tip. Tends to clog up the tip pretty fast if you stop spraying for too long.
Its great stuff though. Gives you peace of mind that one more section is sealed up and now rust-free.
Some photos of the 2nd coat of primer on the roof...... I rubbed down the first coat with 180 grit wet...tried it dry but it clogged up all the time. Then washed and panel wiped, then sprayed.
Most two pack epoxies contain isocyanates. The Jotun stuff can be rollered brushed or sprayed. Should be safe enough if you roller or brush it ( still use a respirator though)
If I was in the UK, I'd go for the Jotun stuff as there is a seller on ebay based in the UK! Do a search on ebay...
It looks like its drying ok, 24 hours and I can still dent it with my nail a bit....feels just very slightly rubbery, but definately harder this evening than it was this morning.
I found a Lechsys supplier in Dublin and called into them today, I just happened to be going to the airport...
I'll leave it and see if it hardens properly...
I used 500ml of epoxy, 250ml hardener, but the 500ml of epoxy didn't have any tinter so the ratio would have been out a bit?
Ok, so its a bit of a disaster.
Apparently the supplier of the epoxy primer (metalflake) had the wrong description of the product on their site.
They sent me the epoxy paint, hardener and thinners, but failed to tell me that the paint also needed a tinter added before it can be used. So it...
I got it from metalflake.com, they never asked what colour...I'm sure it said gray somewhere so I just presumed it was a more solid colour and not so transparent. Its possible I suppose that the gray colour is just from the zinc content and there is no other pigment in there... I'll email...
Lechler epoxy
Hi, just a question about the Lechler Epoxy 29107......
I mixed 500ml 29107
250ml hardener
25ml thinners
I tried it out tonight and was surprised that when sprayed, it has almost no colour, even though it is gray in the spray gun! Is this normal? For some reason, I...
Paint suggestion - this is what I'm doing to my VW T25....
Weld/patch / replace panels
Treat bare metal with phosphoric acid - sold on ebay as descaler
Wash and dry, then paint with Epoxy Primer - Lechler do a good one
Then filler on top of the epoxy primer if needed - UPOL fantastic...
Its usually not possible to get seam sealer inside a sill section as far as I know.
Weld through primer is really only for inaccessible areas and areas where ordinary paint would be burnt off by the welding heat.
On mine, I give a good coating of weld through primer before welding, then spray...
Yes this van needs a lot of work. It would really have made more sense to scrap it and get a better van, but I kind of wanted a project.
There are five similar patches needed for the right side of the roof alone.
Left side only needs one. But to be honest, its quite enjoyable since you are...
I second the earplugs. Much less cumbersome than big ear muffs. I find that goggles for grinding get scratched very easily so I have about 5 pairs of them on standby. My favourite ones at the moment are a pair of US army surplus sun wind and dust goggles.
A light of some sort attached to...
Well, I;ve been doing a few more repairs and its going well so far. Heres one of them - a rusted out section in the roof above the drivers door.

A second, similar patch all welded and ground off...
I used the airgun to cool the panel asap after doing a weld.
Seems to have worked fairly well and I'm happy enough. It will need some filler, but I'll put epoxy primer down first and then put the filler on top of the epoxy.

Last night I had my first encounter with brushable seam sealer. I'm using Dinitrol Brushseal 401. I put it on with a brush and tried to smooth it out as best as I could, but the finish is still fairly rough.
If you are familiar with the VW T25 van, you will know that there is a thick...
I got some crushed glass and tried it out tonight. Similar to the sand in terms of the amount of mess it creates, but does seem to cut faster....its definately sharper stuff. The blasted surface seems shinier than it was with the sand. At 4.50 euros per 25kg bag, its good value as well.
I...
