I have lots of experience melting and even burning metals, with varying degrees of success :D Seriously I wouldn't attempt it if I didn't think I could do it.
TBH its so easy anyone could do it.
Got it done tonight. Took approx 10 mins and was dead easy.
Lay the rad flat & use a stainless wire brush to clean up the damaged area. Hit it with the Bernzomatic TS7000 running on MAPP and slowly heat the area (I didn't bother covering up the fins, a couple of burnt ones doesn't bother me...
Well, I bought it off this guy in a pub.... honest. He said he didn't want it anymore and I could have it for £10 cos his mum was ill in hospital and he needed money for the train to go and visit her. Its the truth!! ;)
Have you tried here:

Ooohhhhhh, I like that! May have to come back to you Mr Weldequip :D
I have a couple of CO2 bottles that need testing. I'm assuming that once tested they come filled with CO2?
I think I'll place some shielding plates over the fins and just leave the tube exposed. The hole is only a pin prick if that, so hopefully just flowing some solder over it will sort it for good. The tubes are deep, so should conduct well keeping the temperature manageable. I'll let you know how...
That's whats on the rad thats in the car at the moment. It lasted for three months then split again (mind you it was on the plastic header tank, and it doesn't bond well to plastic).
I've found some aluminium solder paste. Its solder dust/filings in a flux. Just dab a blob on & head it up and...
Thanks weldequip. It probably will go breasts vertical, but if it does I've not lost anything :D Maybe I'll look for a lower temp alu solder rod though. The Bernzomatic ones melt at 350 deg C I think. There are ones that flow at just under 200 but are mostly tin.
If it all goes wrong I'll get...
Ok, so its not getting religious on me. Its just slightly holy ;)
I have a new (second hand) rad for the Supra and it has a tiny pin hole in one of the tubes. Looks like something has been forced into the rad and flattened a tube slightly, causing a tiny hole.
I've ordered some aluminium...
Sounds like it will be very difficult to achieve the finish you require without pitting or small holes. Even if you weld it proud and grind it down as Mig welds are not guaranteed to be 100% free of porosity. If its anything like my welds it would be like swiss cheese ;) Also the area around the...
That reminds me of the Renault 4 van that my dad used to have.... must have been 1976! Blue I believe. Me & my brother used to sit in the back unrestrained :o
How do I go about getting hold of one as the next project??
I avoid overhead welding like the plague these days. I prefer to turn over whatever I'm working on so its much easier. That said, rangies are not particularly easy to invert :D
I'm slightly deaf in one ear (molten steel in the ear drum is not nice at all) and have burns on my arms from...
Lol.... Wedding & all that. Arrived with the exhaust manifold heat proof wrapping on fire!! That's what you get for using oil soaked second hand stuff ;)
Bigger is better in my book :) Plus for a couple of pence whats the harm?
Just checked with my local welding supplier & they have 400A in stock for £3.80. Will drop in tomorrow to get one!
