I don't mean driving or reversing them. I mean storing, them , maintaining them, insuring them for driving and the calamities that can happen should something fall off, or you have the breakdowns or an accident. I know scores of people who have had those woes. I have had it myself with...
Keep looking for torch on. The bitumen type paint will do as a primer and aid the felt to stick. For the small area a heat torch and heat gun will get that down
These wood preservative watery treatments are ofter just Borax based. If you have real wood a few years old, Ethylene Glycol kills the bugs and is cheap. Acrypol or Flexacryl are better than bitumen based stuff. I put the heavy 4.5kg torch felt on a new trailer some years ago and it did...
The Patrol Y60 I drove had the swivel balls, but they have no oil in them. Don't know if that is better or not, but no knuckle joints are available and they were not bolted on if IRC.

Thing is. It is best to be happy with what you have, as you cannot have it all. You are doing not bad at all Tom. No, car ports are good.
I have 8metre car port leaning onto east elevation of house. This means shelter from prevailing wind and rain. It opens into 6x4 garage and is fenced off...
I have 3 of the classic ones. Very strong. Series 2 gearbox sat on mine for months.
One sits permanently outside in Argyll. Metal is coated in oil every year. Flippin' Clyde built those things. Imp vice is there too.
