Couldn't get my head round why i had power to 31b from coil but if coil not earthing that could explain it.
Was going to bench test relay once...

31b goes onto the coil -ve via pin in diagnostic connector

87 grounding fine, having jumpered from 30

Agree, get a feel and understanding what is happening on something thicker.
Thin stuff technique is a little different and can be demoralising...
