you heard wrong in my opinion ...etch was the product to use before epoxy came along , folk that use epoxy dont etch before hand

typically you dont need to etch before epoxy , check what you have as epoxy should stick to steel better than it sticks to etch

etch doesnt really offer any protection , epoxy is the best option , if it has to be budget stuff then etch and some...

acylic covers alot of products , if you trust him go with that
almost anything will go over it ...idealy 2k if you can get it /use it safely
if not , chassis black /black rust paint etc will be ok
id use the epoxy mastic too...depending on what you want to spend a coat of gloss black on top , 2k being strongest

never used a square lock that im aware of either..agree on the folded ears too , none of the ones ive had used exposed joins like that
draw edges and side handles suggest its a cheapie to me
