I think I get what you are describing with the slit in the wire guide tube. I would think it's done to try and stop bird nesting of the wire. As from your description it has a euro socket then if the over all build of the machine is good then it might be worth investing in a feeder assembly...

Have you considered CO2 for mig (no as nice a looking weld) and then when your mix bottle is due for refill you could go for straight argon. CO2 from a pub bottle or fire extinguisher.
