Hi All,
I mainly work on refurbing motorcycle tanks ranging from 1950's british stuff through to more modern tanks. The old british tanks are fine but the more modern tanks are suuuppper thin. My dad has a Jasic TIG200 which we're using to do any welding but with the modern tanks seem to burn...
Personally I charge £25-30 an hour for bike paint - mainly tanks. Theres welding, brazing, soldering, other engineery type work plus normal paint type work. When i first started on this journey i was quoted £40 an hour for someone to paint my own bike tank, hence why i learnt to do it myself. i...
I always use 1000 wet to get it completely flat, make sure you regularly blow the water off to make sure the surface is dry to make sure you've removed all the low spots.
I have the devilbiss PROV-650 and from memory it was about 50-60 PSI when the whistle blew which ties in with the specs below:
Technical Specifications
Protection: APF=40 / NPF=200
Carbon filter life: 3 months
Supply pressure: 4.0 bar (60psi) minimum to 7.0 bar (100psi) maximum
Air flow rate...
Personally i have a regulator with water trap after the main compressor, this feeds into an air drying water trap () which works very well, then into a secondary 100 ltr air receiver. After this i go into a 3 stage filter, then i have a water trap on my gun.
Thanks - i'll keep to the process i know works for me, i get high quality results wet sanding Primer Surfacer from 600-1000. Not sure i'd get the same results dry sanding with 280-320 especially as a lot of the work i do is black motorcycle tanks.
Thanks for the reply. I've done this and it looks well. I'd normally guidecoat then wetsand the surfacer primer with 600 and 1000 before applying base coat and lacquer. Is the epoxy OK for wetsanding as this would save the surfacer primer layer for smaller parts.
Just painted a few different parts (oil tank, petrol tank and mudguard) last night in the well recommended Lechler Epoxy primer. I'll be leaving this until tomorrow to fully cure. What prep is recommended before applying any filler or can it go straight onto the painted surface? I would normally...
Hi Mike, In my own personal experience i use mini-guns to paint motorcycle tanks for two reasons, not wasting product and secondly air consumption. Mini guns use a lot less CFM than normal 'big' guns. I use (with good success) an ANI GF3 1.2mm tip mini gun for high build primer (2K) and the...
I've used Quartz Crystal Clear 2k lacquer from spraygunsdirect on all my motorcycle tanks/fairings https://www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/index.php/paint-thinners -hardeners/lacquers/quartz-crystal-clear-lacquer-7927.html#sthash.5kaaNE9E.dpbs - i dont use any reducer/thinner as its thin enough...
I've ordered (after much reading on this forum) a litre of the lechler epoxy primer. I ordered the specific harderner as recommended but didnt order any of the lechler thinners. Does it need their specific thinners or can i use the normal thinners i use for all my normal solvent based products...
Thanks - I use Etch primer on all my tanks as its easy to do with a rattle can. i then build on from there with a 2k Surfacer Primer etc. I'm assuming keying the stainless then applying epoxy would be the process, then applying surfacer primer on top as normal.
I know there seems to be an Etch...
I've got a stainless steel fuel tank to paint for an old Vincent motorcycle tank. Some parts need to be a polished finish, parts need painting as per the images attached. Never painted stainless before. I was thinking of polishing all the tank, then masking off the parts that need to remain...
Personally i've used G3 and Meguiars - the Meguiars correction compound on their Microfibre pads used in conjuntion with a DA polisher produces an excellent finish, it also seems more effective than the meg's red foam pad and their own 205 compound and doesnt require any water therefore alot...
