I got one of the spans-a-doorframe ones with two threaded halves, rubber "feet" - goes up easily, comes down on your head even more so, propelling you backwards head-first into the wall...

I'm a convert to the solderless breadboards for first-attempt circuits with legged components, quick and easy, no worries about desoldering if you get it wrong, only a few Local Currency Units for a couple of boards and a hatful of jumper wires.

Good treatment s 2" rockwool slabs in a 2X1/2 wooden frame with hessian or similar over, absorbs high and mid frequencies and can be put at an angle to break up resonances. Also bookshelves with *assorted* books break up reflections (know there was a reason...)

I just open a command prompt and set a ping running to a well-maintained site like Google or EvilBay (ping -t -w 1 www.whatever.com) the -t runs it until you stop with ctrl-c, -w 1 tells it to wait one second before the next one out whether you got a response or not. When you stop it it'll give...
Some are easier than others... I use Turbocad and it took a while to get the hang of it, but was worth it - and it'll output STL files to run through Slic3r for the 3D printer, good results.
It's mostly point and click, but you can type dimensions, angles etc when accuracy counts.

The DC motor will probably run to way higher rpm than the original induction motor, you'll likely need a smaller motor pulley and larger driven. The DC motors are good for torque right through the speed range, the KB controllers are very good if a bit pricy - be warned, the speed control pots on...
That British Transport film's a cracker - anyone else notice the reverb added to the harp music as they went into the tunnel? Attention to detail that :)

My starting point for the lathe was only having 240, and it was a few years before 240 to 415 VFDs got affordable! Now I'd power it from my phase converter's 415, like my mill / TIG / pillar drill...

Pretty much, and a multispeed motor may need treating as multiple motors - but if the full load amps in the speeds are close, you can get away with setting the LOWEST as the max motor current if you can only have one profile.
