Can't say for definite & no doubt somebody will come along to correct me but it looks very similar to the Ash I bought to remake the bodywork framing on my 1930's car.
Beech I reckon.
What's the trick with putting new handles on hammers and axes ?
The ones I've done soon come loose. I've got a nice big ball pein I want to get back into action.
Shape the end of the shaft so it's a dead fit in the hole and takes some knocking on then cut a slot lengthways in the end to the depth of the head. Knock the shaft into the head and put a wood wedge into the slot you cut and you can put a steel wedge the other way on to spread it some more. Some people say soak them overnight but I never bother and I've done lump hammers and brick hammers with no problems.
