After a bit of advice from the more experienced among us
I am currently restoring the underside of my vehicle by treating rust with deox-gel or replacing badly rusted steel with fresh (all will then be epoxy'd, seam sealed and undersealed). Certain areas and lapped seams the choice is obvious as the area is badly rusted but some areas the rusting is minimal - some rusting around spot welds and some flaking primer leading to surface rusting but not seriously eating into the metal.
What I'd like to know is bearing in mind I can't have the car off the road for many months (this is not a restoration to showroom spec) what is the best way to deal with specifically lapped seams that aren't badly rusted?
I thought about cutting out areas to get to what's beneath (and have done on some bad areas) but you can be left with a lot of welding afterwards for what is not much rust underneath - seems overkill and eats up time. I was wondering whether expanding if necessary the lapped seam just enough to get some bristles of a wire brush in there to remove any loose, then hosing the area with a syringe full of thinned 90% zinc and finally closing it back up was an option?
One other minor query, when painting internal/enclosed areas is it best to coat them in zinc followed by cavity wax where practical or would you go with epoxy plus cavity wax?
I apologise if this has been covered but most of the advice I've found seems to be just cut out the rust (which is the ideal) but give no real help on mild-ish rust in lapped seams.
Thanks,
Robert
