Its basically the drivetrain out of a early v8 range rover, but with bigger stronger bespoke axles with 6 stud wheels fitted to what is basically a general purpose squaddie proof modular pickup with aluminium body parts, and a lot of them were factory fitted with a really useful mid mounted capstain winch which can exit forwards or rear. This one didn't have a nokken winch fitted as it was ordered for use developing new kit but I will be keeping my feelers out for one as theyre part of its lore and very useful. Ditto a overdrive unit if anyone has a lt95 one kicking about. It has to be for a lt95 and not a series though as theyre different.
This exact vehicle in service was used to test the wide track sankey trailer first developed for the vampire infrerometer trailer at the military research ground, then spent some time in antwerp where it got painted sand before being sold off. I'm the second owner on the v5...
Its military "log book" (data card).
And Les from the club was really kind to provide me with the following pictures from back working for a living on the military vehicle proving grounds.
And all erect (ooer)
Another big thing is the powered trailer, theres a second PTO running at shaft speed can be used to drive a second rear axle, but the trailer although brilliant for preventing getting stuck also tended to push the 101 over on its side if you got it jack knifed and booted it. So they have all the drive and holes in the crossmembers and a few have escaped in the wild complete. Thats why its not unknown to see heavily modified 6x6 format ones.
Not my vehicle obviously, but from the advert of the time.
