New poster here... Thanks in advance for any help provided.
I am very rusty on my heat transfer equations and I would probably screw this up anyway, so figured I would reach out for some help and ask the experts.
I am trying to determine if a paint system can be applied to the ID of a pipe before a support stand is welded to it. To determine this, I will need to figure out the heat created on the ID of the pipe, when welding on the OD.
The OD has an affixed repad, so there are 3 mediums through which heat is being transferred before the ID of the pipe heats up.
Layer 1: Steel Repad on outside of pipe is 1" thick a572 gr50
Layer 2; 0.1mm of static air between repad and pipe wall
Layer 3: Pipe wall, which is 5/8" thich a 572 gr50
The weld being performed is 4" on each side of a square tube being affixed to the repad. So it will be 4" x 4 separate welds (repositioning time will provide some cooling of the HAZ?).
I sketched a silly little diagram with some assumptions that should help (scanned and uploaded as a pdf) - I can make it a JPG if that's easier.
Go easy on me here...
thanks again
